wicklow beach tuesday 14th april

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and jordan then fishface and eyesreilley arrived around 6.30pm

Duration: me and jordan 3pm - 3am (eyes and fishfaceleft around 11pm)

Tide: all states

Weather: sunny, calm and dry

Bait: rag, lug, squid, mack and sand eel

Rigs: 3 hook flappers and pully's

Results: ME- 7 dogs, 2 whiting and 2 dab. JORDAN- 6 dogs, 3 whiting and 2 coalies. EYESREILLEY- dogs, whiting and dabs. FISHFACE- dogs and whiting (if i'm wrong lads correct me    )

Report: jordan's quest for a few dogs led us down to wicklow by kind invitation from eyesreilley and fishface. we knew the mark we intended to fish so got there early in the hope of some daytime catches :D :D we set up camp and were fishing for 3pm but never got a bite until eyes and fishface arrived    . the only interest our rods were getting was from a hoard of big edible crabs who were not only munching our baits but destroying our rigs :x :x :x :x . these big chaps were cutting through our rigs like they were made of thread    . i was puzzled why our rigs were coming back in missing the bottom hooks. that was until jordan beached one of the culprits red handed (or clawed as the case was    ).but in saying that it could'nt have been any worse than our trip to cranfield point and kilkeel harbour on sunday. we went 10 hours and 2 marks without a bite       . not long after eyes and fishface arrived fishface landed the first fish. a wee whiting. then eyes got a dab followed by jordan's coalie. it seemed like i was looking at a big fat blank again :( :( :( :( . a few more fish later and fishface was taking great joy in pointing out my lack of fish and everyone elses ease at getting them    then it happened, phew!!!! a sigh of relief. i got a knock and landed my first fish in days, a dab. not only the first one of the year, but a new p.b. :P :P :P i could finally relax     . the whole trip was geared up around getting jordan a few dogs but they had'nt arrived yet. :? :? :? :? but that all changed as fishface got the first of what became a doggie onslaught :D :D :D :D . it all went a bit mad and hetic for 2 hours when you had no sooner baited up one rod and the other was nodding away. it was excellent!!! this was what we had came for and the dogs were feeding hard     . it was so busy i did'nt even get a chance to take my usual battery of photos    we all got a good dose of fish between us and we fished on as fishface and eyesreilley headed on home as they had work the next morning. we stuck it out until 3am when the rain started and the thought of the 2 1/2 hour drive home set in     so by 6am jordan was tucked up in bed grinning from ear to ear, beaming with pride from his doggie session made in heaven      and to think that some anglers hate doggies and complain about them spoiling a session :? :? :? :? they made our trip worth while and full of memories that will last longer than the pile of easter eggs piled up in jordan's bedroom      now we can't wait until our next trip to wicklow to fish with eyesreilley and fishface. 2 top blokes who had us laughing the whole session and even taught us a few new tips and tricks

That's not a crab, its a fracking Martian!!!!!!!!! Holy Jesus you sure you didn't see flying saucers?

Congrats on the PB Dab Al, it's great to beat yourself! I don't really want to say anything about Jordan at this point. He is in the bad books BIG TIME!!! I fished there three times in the last 6 weeks looking for a Coalie for my species list. With no luck at all  Does he keep a fishing diary? Might have to do an old mission impossible to have a sneak.

Ok then well done Jordan on the doggies and the Coalie

Good long session lads. Al you better cool off the red bull though its not good to drink 7 cans on the way home

Great report Al, me and Facelift, i mean Fishface , had a great time, and it was great to see Jordan having so much fun, That kid certainly knows his fishing. It was great to see him carefully unhook and gently release the doggies,,, i've seen grown men afraid of these harmless fish, it also saved us running up and down the beach   . I told you Fishface would rub it in if you didnt catch, but once you started there was no stopping you. A nice mix of species too.It was also great to be fishing under floodlights,,,i mean Neils headlamp   ,, i had to keep checking to see if my L1 was turned on  . The yuppie teenagers drinking and singing rugby songs just added to the atmosphere   ,,, you just can't be intimidated by teenagers who wish you a" good evening". I got ,1 x dab, 4 x dogs and 2 x whiting,,,,,,,think Neil got 4 x dogs and 3 x whiting. Take care and see you both soon.

cheers lads. there was a brave dose of the big edible crabs there until dark. we only landed 2 of them who had not only eaten the bait, but swallowed the hook too    they fooled us all afternoon. reeling them in, we thought they were gonna be big dogs. they turned out to be big crabs    we soon figured out why some traces were coming in with the bottom hooks missing.    the biggest one's shell was about 14 inches across and would have been able to feed a couple of people     but we already had our sandwiches packed and nothing suitable to keep him in   . if i had put him in my backpack he would have ripped his way out    when he was reeled in he had a hold of the 6oz gripper in his claw, and needless to say it's now only about a 5 and a half ounce gripper now      and defella, jordan has his fishing diary under lock and key   i would'nt mind knowing what his secret is myself

Great to set out to target a particular species and then catch a bunch of them.
That is some crab alright   dont think I would fancy picking that up - you could easily end up minus a finger
