bangor and donaghadee friday 10th april 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me and jordan

Duration: bangor 2pm-5.30pm donaghadee 6pm-2am

Tide: all states

Weather: heavy showers and hail to begin with then sunny

Bait: squid mack and rag

Rigs: 1 hook mini rigs and 3 hook flappers

Results: BANGOR: jordan 1 shore rockling and i blanked (again). DONAGHADEE: jordan 2 coalies, 2 pouting, 2 poor cod 1 shore rockling and 1 doggie (FINALLY!!) ME: 4 shore rockling and 1 coalie

Report: jordan wanted to go on a mini species hunt around bangor today, but when we arrived there was a good bit of colour in the water so hopes were'nt too high :x :x from past expereience they don't feed too well when the waters coloured up. but we thought we'd give it a go anyway. the first 3 hours were grim with no bites what's soever but the water did clear up a bit giving us a glimmer of hope :D :D :D just as conditions were starting to improve the bloody HSS zipped up the lough sending out it's usual waves which sent us scampering up the sea defences     . this left the water looking like chocolate milkshake and all hopes of the minis were well and truely dashed   so on our way out of the harbour jordan went to the rockling hole that always has the odd fish in it to save the blank. and in true form one drop of his bait produced a wee shore rockling :P :P :P you could set your watch by em

seeing as we had the bait to use up we headed on round the coast to donaghadee to see what was about. i was'nt holding out too much hope of getting anything before the sun went down, but the earlier rain had cleared away and it was sunny and warm, so we thought why not :D :D :D :D . jordan had his heart set on a doggie as they have avoided his hooks so far this year and we had a box of squid to use up anyway. so he fished one rod with big baits for dogs and plopped his mini rig rod over the side for shannys and sea scorpions. i fished 2 rods with 3 hook flappers to do a bit of scratching just to see what was about. jordan's mini rig got a knock on it's first cast and he landed a female corkwing wrasse  :D :D the first wrasse of the year from this mark   he then landed another one that was a bit bigger and broke out into the fish dance      . i was made up for him as he was beaming from ear to ear at beating me to the first wrasse of the year at 2 marks now    . he also reminded me that i still had'nt caught a fish yet today     . he landed a coalie and poor cod before my old blank saving friends the rockling ventured out of thier hidey holes to feed after dark. one good knock later my blank was saved by a nice 28cm shore rockling quickly followed by 3 more :D :D :D :D . we then got a few coalies between us and jordan got a strongly marked pouting. his dark verticle bars were very clear, best we've seen in a while :P :P . by now we were almost out of bait and i packed my rods away and put the last whole squid on jordan's doggie rod. it was desperation stakes time and jordan struck into what he thought was a crab bite. but it was the doggie he's been waiting on all year     so a few pics later and a rex hunt trademark kiss and it was returned to swim another day    so what started off as a bit of a disaster turned into a great day out. jordan got his dog and the wrasse followed him to another mark. (he's now being called the pied piper of wrasse    ) and i was just greatful not to blank again

cheers conor. it was just good to get back to our regular haunts where we know where the fish are at     . this old hit and miss stuff can give the old confidence a knock :| :| :| :| but you gotta at least try it   . that's the most strongly marked pouting we've had from the shore in a long time and it was'nt a bad shorey either. i can always count on them to save a blank at donaghadee
