Clare Bass

#1 Post by baitdigger »

People: Me

Duration: 12-2.30

Tide: 40 minutes up from low and rising

Weather: Overcast rain westerly breeze

Bait: Fresh blow lug fresh razors

Rigs: pulley pennels, 4oz grips

Results: two bass, one small one just over 7lb

I had been trying to get on this North Clare beach mark for the last week but conditions havent been right. I had dug some good lug, (which dont seem to be keeping in good condition for the normal time, not sure if they are coming into breeding condition which I believe is triggered by a rise in temperature) also had a handful of razors.
First thing I noticed on arrival was the colour of the water which was still very brown, so I opted for loading my rigs with big baits, 4-5 big lug on one and 3 lug and a razor. I chucked the first rod out about 50 yards and went to hammer the second out resulting in a crack-off that sounded like a pistol. I changed reels and re- set the second rod, just as I was about to cast I saw the first rod buckle over and the line went slack. I wound down and struck, but no weight, the bass ran straight towards the beach, only when it got in the shallows did it decide to make three or four runs, a really good scrap on a light bass rod.
A couple of photos and weighing and the fish was returned, it took about 5 minutes to recover before swimming off strongly.
Another bite about 30 minutes later produced a much smaller but still hard scrapping Atlantic Bass

The beach was covered in maggots and if it doesnt rain today it should produce good flatties over the weekend.

I packed up and headed to a nearby rock mark where I had arranged to meet Saltydog. Unfortunatley the evening didnt live up to the earlier session, with 2 spider crabs bieng the only things landed.

Congrats again Neil on the Bass real beauty :) 8) Shame the rock mark didn't produce but has bags of potential with the deep water and features around it.... i'd say we'll be pulling bumber pollack and wrasse from there soon enough and maybe a surprise trigger
