Was in superquinn yesterday and saw that had the usual small school size bass for sale, 25% off WHILE STOCKS LAST!......indeed :wink:

Anyway a question, are gill netted salmon tagged for sale, or is it just rod caught fish? OR if you tag a salmon/sea trout you catch can you sell it....? I am not very well up on this stuff only expanding beyond Mackeral a year ago now and I have never fished for game fish in the sea. I presume you need a licence for that or am i wrong?

I may be wrong but wouldn't the "small school bass" of the type sold by superquinn be farmed in Turkish/Greek waters?

Doubt if they are wild-caught Irish/northern European fish

AT THE FISHMONGER'S:

No Gill Tag - farmed salmon

Red Gill Tag - netted wild salmon

Blue Gill Tag - Rod caught fish ABSOLUTELY illegal to sell these, if you actually do see one on the fishmonger's slab at least two people have broken the law.

Is this right?

The supermarkets do sell farmed sea bass. The gas thing is though is that they don't point out that you are buying farmed fish. Also someone told me last year that there is actually a sea bass farm down around Kenmare somewhere, not sure how true that is.

Don't know about the tag colours but selling rod caught salmon is illegal for a set period of the year, can't remember off hand when that is though. I think maybe from the 1st of Jan to ?

I have heard something about farmed Bass but the qoute is funnier if they weren't. :lol: Are there any other farmed sea fish?

Almost definitely farmed................ Turbot & Halibut were being farmed in Ireland until recently & while we arent doing yet it other countries are farming cod..........
anybody know any other farmed sea fish

Off the top of me head:

Red tag: Commercial netted wild salmon.

Blue tag: Rod and line recreational angling salmon.

Farmed fish: Cod and Halibut in Scotland and Norway, Trout and Salmon there as well as here, Bass farmed in the Med somewhere.

Dunno if you can sell a blue tagged fish. Must go check my licence. (No chance of me ever selling one of mine, I have far too much trouble just trying to catch one in the first place!)

I was fishing my local pier about 2wks ago and two lads that are net fishing sold 2 salmon which had blue tags.
