... is the subject of a talk given by Brian Cooke (a member of this forum) in Howth Angling Centre, West Pier tonight (Monday July 11) at 9pm

Just read that in the Times, thought some lads on here might be interested

I remember many years ago to catch mullet they need to be feeding i.e. look for their mouths on the surface. Used to catch them with very small hooks and floating pieces of bread. Best in harbor areas close in, can go to very good sizes.

mullet is a picky fish...

*use floucarbo line that's invisible in water, if they see the line the wont take.
*Try to hide the hook in the bread.
*place the bait near their feeding place, the eat from stones and rocks.
*IF there is seagulls around and they are trying to take your bread, use some baking color, and color the bread green, then the seagulls wont take it.

That's all i can come up with at the moment...

Fished them last week in killybegs, with great sucess!
Used a light spinning rod, 8lb line, clear plastic pencil float, a few small split shots below the float and a size 10 hook, similar in size to a fly hook for trout fishing! Made up a bucket of ground bait, this consisted of 2 loafs of bread, i turned them into bread crums as they dispearse better, sweetcorn, a couple of mackerel fillets blended up, guts and all! Cat food, the tesco stuff, smells terrible! Mix this up in a bucket and start throwing it out into the are you are going to fish to get the mullet feeding. Also use an old vegtable sack, you can either fill this with some of the ground bait or both bread and ground bait and throw this into the area you intend to fish.
Then get the rods set up. Take a few fillets of mackerel and use tiny chunks of mackerel flesh, try an use some without the skin and hide the hook well. Also a small flake of bread or just a single piece of sweetcorn.
I have to say the mackerel flesh is the best and we caught 5 mullet all in the region of 4 to 5lb and they were excellent sport, defintly worth a try. They really arnt that hard to catch, just make the effort and its worth it!

Mullet are hard to catch if you try and fish for them with just your hook bait. Groundbait regularly and it actually gets a wee bit boring (ONLY A WEE BIT!)

Yeah, I forgot to mention that, you have to keep throwing out ground bait!! It is slightly boring alrite, but it really just depends, some days they take well and others they dont!

Where exactly were you fishing in Killybegs Mark? Just from the pier?

Well you could try the pier but I never have, the little slip way over the shore road, just before black rock pier, over past swan nets. Also out in bruckless, excellent spot for the monsters! I mean really big mullet, theres always a shoal of about 6-8 fish always together. Anything up to 8lb by the look of them!!
