Mizen Head Late April

#1 Post by Pyreneenguy »

I'm renting a cottage near Goleen, late April for one week.

This will be my fifth visit to the area, but I've never been so early.

Bass will obviously be a target, but what about the other species ?

Will ray be about at Bantry and Castletownbearhaven ?

Is it too early for pollack ? Deep-water codling ? Bull-huss ?

Any info appreciated !

Thanks !

Used to fish around near Crookhaven -

Streek Head - leave car in village - go right opposit the pier in the village & follow the road around bearing right all the time. As far as I can remember - last time was 1994 - it's a bit of a scramble down to the rocks but it's do-able.

Reen Point over by Galley Cove - not bad access.

Off the rocks to the east side of Barleycove.

Toormore is supposed to fish ok but I've not tried it. (Toormore used to be sh*t for weevers - on one day there two people were stung - a mate of ours and some french guy - luckily we knew what to do).

Barley Lake is supposed to have flats, Mullet and Eels - again I never tried there

Looking forward to hearing how you get on.

Forgot one other place. Go back thru' Toormore and take the first right. Take the second right down this road and then the next right and you end up at a place called Castlepoint. Facing south there is a bit of a castle to your right. We fished along that stretch and caught pollock, wrasse annd mackies to spinners.

Only a week to go,before my fishing hol. near Goleen/Mizenhead.

Anyone been fishing down in this area?

Any reports of bass from the beaches around Barleycove?
