GREYSTONES COVE, TUESDAY 17-02-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:ME AND BIG MICK

Duration:4-8.30pm

Tide:high 15.34pm

Weather:fine, sunny,calm

Bait:lug,mack squid

Rigs:flappers ,mini rig

Results:me, 1 coalfish, 1 dab, 3 whiting, big mick, 4 whiting

Report:Got off early from work and headed to Greystones. Stopped in Viking Tackle on the way to pick up a few bits and bobs and order bait for the weekend,,,"Are you ok for bait for today Dave?",,says Mick,,,"Fine", says I, but when I opened my weekends leftover lug they were all manky and burst etc   . I salvaged a few and cast out , one rod at distance and the other,my "lucky" rod, at the base of the rocks. Spoke to a guy who was spinning on the rocks for a while and got some tips re the manky lugs. He spun for a while but didnt catch anything here and moved on. I started using my one hook mini rig on my lucky rod as a lure as nothing was touching it on the bottom and and to my surprise caught a coalfish, 23cms,first of '09.At this stage i was surrounded by about 10 good natured young lads, all spinning with feathers. They didnt catch anything, but lost feathers, traces, and even the top half of one of their rods. I was more nervous that one of them would fall in as they took up some precarious positions on the rocks. They headed off as it got dark and big mick arrived on the scene (i'm sure he didnt scare them off  ). He was delighted that i'd only caught one fish and had been there two hours before him :? , laughing as i got snagged on a rock on the retrieve. "You'll have to pull for a break", he laughed. I wiped the smile off his face when i walked to a different side and freed the snag, and landed fish no. 2, a dab 8) . A whiting followed for me before he started to catch up with one of his own and it finished up 5-4 to me, but as he told me in work today,,,i'd been there 2 hours before him  . I responded by telling hin that the hour he stayed after i left was easily worth 2 daylight hours, so even if it had finished up 4-4 , theoretically I still would have won   . Our personal battle continues on Saturday in Arklow

Had to read the date on this thread twice to make sure I wasnt seeing things  feathers is feb

As Brian said, I had a nice coalie 41cm very near by there last week.........must admit it was a bit of a fluke, last cast.

I'd have thrown him back but he was pissing blood everywhere. Tasted great though
