What are types of Irish Sharks?

#1 Post by Bass Catcher »

Hello lads, last week i was fishing with my brother down at Helvick off the rocks and we spotted a shark it was very dark in colour and was atleast 8-10 foot (if not bigger) travelling very slow across the water, and i was just wondering how many different types of sharks there are in Ireland and if anyone might know what type of shark it was that i seen please let me know! Thanks.

irish sharks:- lesser spotted dogs, greater spotted dogs (bull huss) spur dogs, blue mouthed dogs, smooth hounds(spotted), smooth hounds (stellate), tope, blue, porbeagle, thresher, six gilled, mako, basking.
it could have been any of the last 6 but you would have noticed the tail of a thresher and the colour of a blue and mako are very rare and basking very large all in all it was either a porbeagle or a blue.

FWIW

Blues (see the logo) are quite slim whereas porgies are far stouter and more brown on top. There also as rare as rocking horse do do these days... the most likely option would be a small basking shark working on surface plankton. Porgies are known to wander along on the surface in fine weather.

Now all you have to do is go out again with a boat rod, lots of line... :D

Good luck
