colliemore is the spot to fish beyond 80 yards if you fancy catching lobster pots,
especially before hw or after lw as yer tackle will sweep in and hook the pots!
i reckon the potters make more from tackle than lobsters!!!

This warning above isn't accurate.

There are, in fact, female members of the judiciary in this country, including the eminent Justice Susan Denham who sits on the Supreme Court. Regardless, libel and slander (which is the spoken form of defamation) cases are usually jury trials, so the "man in the white wig" does not decide on the merits of the case (in most cases on this site, men in "white coats" would be more appropriate interventionists, though there was, in my opinion, at least one possible criminal libel unintentionally made on the site last week), though she/he may direct the jury, and of course, input into any damages.

You have a qualified right to freely express yourself, publish opinions or make comment. Truth is always an absolute defence, except in actionable per se cases in relation to impugning the chastity of a lady or saying somebody has an STD etc. It costs nothing to threaten to sue somebody. That's neither here nor there.

On the subject of the legality of the postings on this site, the following must be said.

* A criminal libel is one where claims are made as to criminal activity of a person or organisation - for example, alleged attacks on property, murder, rape, robbery, etc., etc.,

* To write that Mr X is a "__' gobshite" is not actionable, but to say "Mr. X is involved in the illegal netting of bass" is.

* To write "The Sallynoggin and Ballybrack Troutfishers Association are big smelly wankers" is not actionable. To write "The Sallynoggin and Ballybrack Troutfishers bribed councillor Mickey Mouse to do zone land for their new HQ" would be.

* To write "Killiney Beach is a complete shithole" is not actionable. To write "Mr. X of Killiney Road has been pumping untreated sewage onto a public beach and he don't give a shite either" is.

* On an internet forum, there is a level of ribaldry and somewhat robust comment that is not actionable, notwithstanding the above. It may certainly be distasteful and hurtful, but not illegal, if the comments are general (a wänker may certainly wank for example), don't damage the reputation or good name of an identified person in the eyes of a reasonable person, peers, colleagues, the public, and so on. For example to write "That BIG_LEADSWINGING_MICKEY1969 is a complete tool" would be offensive, but would also be laughed out of court if an action were taken. Whereas writing "A well-known member of the Sallynoggin Fish Conservation Board, who masquerades as BIG_LEAD_SWINGING_MICKEY1969 on a web site" is a hypocrite because I saw him /her selling 10 cm bass out of the back of the family BMW SUV" would be. Naturally, of course, this depends on where the libel is published too.

* Incidentally, using pseudonyms, usernames, deliberate mispellings of names organisations or individuals does not give you any protection from the law as the real entity can be identified. Replacing vowels with * or other symbols or other devices is included in this. Neither does shoving the word "allegedly" into an otherwise libellous claim render the claim immune from prosecution.
