cobh 1st feb

#1 Post by red »

me and a friend, phillip 2030-2300

conditions: cold with a light breeze.

baits: frozen mack(last 2 from the summer) squid, fresh lug

rigs: 2 hook flappers.

results: plenty of pin whiting and 3 "large" whiting, 28cm, 29cm and 31cm.

went out friday night and had 2 bites on my first 2 casts but lost both   . nothing esle for the next 2 hours before i headed home.
wanted to redeem myself after 3 blanks in a row so headed to the car park in cobh as ive never blanked here before but never had any great results either. its also a comfy place to fish as your pretty much next to the car as phill had to collect his missus from town and was waiting on a phone call.
first few casts got nothing with phill moaning about the cold so i gave him my gloves. he had the first of the fish after about an hour, a double of pin whiting  . soon after that i pulled in the monster :) whiting @ 31cm. next cast i had the 28cm and only tiny ones after that. i threw out another cast and went to have a slash only to hear phill sayin my rod took a good knock(he didnt have the sense to strike it  ) by time i got back whatever it was had decided to leave it. probably a doggie as ive caught a few of them here before at night. then had 2 star fish in a row doubled with more pin whiting. then phill "got in on the action" with his pin/starfish double. just before 11 on the last cast phill had his 29cm whiting before the call came thru and he was summoned to act as taxi man and we packed up and left.
all in all i was glad of the whiting as it meant my dreaded blank was over.....untill the next night. a wee bit dissapointed not to get a doggie tho.
all 3 of the "bigger" whiting took the frozen mack with the smaller fish taking the mack and lug. the squid wasnt touched all night.

Fair play to you for heading out on an evening as cold as that and actually catching fish.

I normally do some fishing on a Sunday but thought better of it yesterday. I did venture out in the afternoon and checked the access to a few new marks that I had identified on the OSI website but the longest I was out of the car was about 25 minutes and got back inside just as my face and ears were becoming numb

So much for global warming

yes i did shane. pity it was just a whiting but thats about all ive been able to catch this winter. better than nothin i suppose. i couldnt have lived with myself if i had 4 blanks in a row. that spot has always got me fish, just nothing to get excited about. got my first strap conger there a while back along with a sea scorpian and a few doggies.

the weather wasnt too bad. it was cold but i work outdoors on the top of a hill so im well used to it.

i was behind the train station in the free car park, just at the end of the railing. its not a great spot to fish but went there cos its comfortable and id had 3 blanks in a row at other spots and this spot always gets me a few fish. i was casting as far as i could but thats not too far. dont expect too much. had doggies and a strap conger one night there and a sea scorpian durin the day but only whiting any other time ive been there. mack seemed to work best everytime with lumi beads. the pin whiting were taking anything that was in the water.
