one up one down cacsade loop rig. it casts like a dream even when casting into the wind. there is a write up on it in this months tsf magazine. a variation is to add another hook length to make it 2 up, 1 down.

this is gonna sound complicated royte!! both rigs where designed for problems that shouldn't have existed and both where mildly successive.

first was a standard three hook loop, ive had problems when using long light snoods on them. the loop kept twisting around the second hooklenght. it seemed i had to use 20lb plus line, tried flouro too with little success. so i made up a simple three hook loop with 2 and half foot snoods tied with 12lb maxima. only this time i placed a hanger, made from a gemini snood clip under the second set of crimp,swivel bead set... and hung the loop of it when the rig was clipped down. kinda worked, failed a couple of times a session which really annoys me, so im still using 20lb snoods on em

second rig was even worse. designed for mid water fish. took inspiration from the split rig and made a three hook pop up rig on a 6 foot rig body. tied a simple three hook clip down made from the 6ft rig body. placed a 10mm gemini floaty bead on each snood and finished the rig with an upside down gemini lead link, tied another couple of foot of 50lb line to the other end and tie the lead on to another link. clip the rig down and hang the lead of the upside lead clip, hey presto your bait is suspended a few feet of the bottom when casted out. fairly streamlined too so distance wasnt compromised. took it down to killiney last year and caught whiting on it, no more than i would have i had used a normal rig. total over kill, im sure it will have its day, when gars are plentiful in dublin, yeah right!!

in all honesty three hook flappers and clip down are without doubt the best for a reason, cause their simple!!

I have suffered frequently with the bottom snood on a 2 up 1 down flapper getting tangled round the grip lead due to surf, weed, crabs, fish etc

I'm sure this is a fairly common thing for some of us, but I find it can weaken the bottom snood, especially given the added friction when reeling in a fish caught on that particular hook length, its also a pain in the backside having to untangle it, more so with extremely cold hands.

I had contemplated (but being lazy not tried yet) using some stiff rig tubing, say 8/10" from the swivel on the rig body down towards the hook, secured in place by a bead/crimp, just enough to keep the snood from snagging the grips on the lead.

Has anybody tried this, if so I'd be interested to hear any feedback as to its success.

If not, I'll try it over the comming weeks and see does it help

yep, mark had the same problem, virtually vanished now. thread a crimp, small bead. swivel, large bead on the rig body, tie the link on and crimp directly above the link knot

Maybe you could try a long boom on your bottom snood? It might work i tried to something similar with tubing and it didn't really work too well for me

three hook flapper plain and simple or pully rig ,any fancy stuff i ever try ends up in a big yasus tangle ,two hooked clipped pennel for bass at distance about the only other one i use
for rough ground 1 hook clipped down (normaly an imp with the snood crimps left loose enough to move )fancy pancy only for nancies

thanks for the big reply lads,

the general idea seems to be keep it simple,

i like the trace you have eric for the garfish,

i was never able to master the wishbone rig the 2 snoods seemed to tangle all the time

and i ever only got singles never got a double using it,

and i will agree with UVOX the pulley is a class rig

any ideas for boat angling gear? colours flashing plain or whatever

i would mainly breakdown rigs because i want to put my own touch to them ( maybe beads or blades or to lenghten snoods)

i find that i would only be getting a double instead of a treble on my 3 hook rigs the top hook being the one that would catch the least amount of fish, so i would cut it off and put a flyer up high to utilise 3 hooks

any rigs that you would improve or invent

over the last year ive been using a simple but very effective pulley whisbone rig, all you have to do is make a normal pulley and just above the snood tie a stop knot but leave one of the tags long enough to tie another hook onto it. clip down and away you go, you can put a couple of beads or sequence on it also, what ever you prefare.

Like most people I tend to keep my rigs fairly simple and either use pulley rigs or flappers and occasionally use flyers. The only thing I sometimes do with my flappers is to use power gum or float rubbers to secure the snood swivels, it just means you can easily adapt a 2 up flapper to be a 1up 1down very easily and without having to change rigs and can be handy sometimes. Another thing I noticed over the past year was that when I started using floaty beads on the top snood of my flappers I seemed to start catching more on that top snood, I actually got a couple of relatively decent coalies and pollock last year using those beads.

Just on tying wishbones, I've seen people come up with all sorts of ways of tying these but by far the simplest and my favourite is this way, I cant find any photos of it so I'll try to describe it. Take a long length of line (a little longer than you want to overall length of the snood to be), now tie a hook onto each end of this length of line. Now bring the two hooks together and decide on which length you want the wishbone to be, then simply tie a figure of eight knot. You will now have a wishbone and a loop, simply snip either end of the loop and that's it a simple wishbone.

it still tangles in similar conditions a lot of the time a lead with no grips stops this happening or just use a 3 up...

have a similar rig but use it with cascade swivels. you just run the bottom snood through the eyes of the cascade and trap in between beads and stop knots. the clip on this cascade takes the takes the middle hook. fishes the same way. make the rig 8 feet, top 2 snoods are 30" and the bottom is 60". use it with a flat lead for searching out fish in difficult conditions. you can fish really light snoods on it when a standard loop rig would tangle.
