Mag 525

At the suggestion of various members and given the magazines will run a mile from criticising a piece of kit, here is your chance to tell us what you really think about a rod, reel, line, lure... keep it legal please!

Mag 525

#1 Post by FMCN »

I have one of the older Mag 525s which is a great reel and a 525 supermag which is a terrible reel. Looking at the online sites it looks like the original 525 has also been tweaked and is being called the 525 slidey and you can buy a 525 mag xtra. Anyone use either of these reels and which is closest to the original mag 525. I assume you can't get the original 525 mag as it was a few years ago.

HI Francis,

AFAIK the slidey is the original. It's the sliding setting for the mags.

Hi Alby

Yes i thought that, but reading some of the info on Veals and Gerrys websites i thought they had altered the braking system as well. Just wondering if it had affected the reel.

I have the original and its the slidey version francis. The new one that came out was called the 525 mag xtra. Both great reels and i must admit i like the original better. I will swap you the penn 525 mag original for the 525 supermag if your interested

Francis stay clear of the xtra IMO.i got one span new and its a load of sh*t. Ceramic bearings that arent ceramic at all...mags pop out..sounds like a tractor casting and retreiving(so not spool balance) If you can get your hands on the original youll be sorted...they are still available from the states..or even a good second hand one....not sure how "original" the ones in veals are, ask around. penn's QC has gone to the dogs.

Have two originals and i will never sell them. never a sinlge problem with either.

I picked up a mag extra on flea bay for £85 brand new.

Not used alot yet so far but its performing equally as good as my original mag and for that price couldnt go wrong.

Thanks Mark. Yes i see Veals are selling a 525 mag standard which they describe as the original back on sale, but it is out of stock and Gerrys are selling a 525 mag slidey which they have tweaked with new bearings and describe it as similar to a 525 mag xtra but slightly cheaper. All very confusing. I'll just have to keep an eye on ebay and visit the tackle shops to see if they have any of the new old models back in stock.
