Arklow Harbour, 26/01/09

#1 Post by shamoo0804 »

People: Me & Corbyeire

Duration: 18.45 -22.15

Tide:Out then in

Weather: Ok

Bait: Mack, lug, squid, sandeel, mussel

Rigs: Flappers, pulleys

Results:Flounder, dab, poorcod, whiting, 3 bearded rockling

Report:

Brian had fancied fishing somewhere he hadnt been before, so we decided on the harbour. Knew it would throw a few different species our way, but werent hopeful of anything decent. I'd only fished here once myself before.

We both fished a flapper with small baits and a pulley with big baits.

I was first in with a few whiting, then brian got the flounder. Strange fish, very white around the fins and tail, almost like it had lost its pigment. Should have got a photo really

The fishing was sporadic, the odd double and treble for me, then nothing for 30 mins...this is how it continued.

I got a nice rockling, very fat, looked like he'd been gorging on food all evening. He took the mussel.

The whiting seemed to prefer the lug over any other bait.

We had made a decision to pack up by 10pm, but then I got a dab, this kept us out for another 15 minutes, but only another whiting was caught.

Brian had outfished me on our last outing, but I'm glad to say normal service has been resumed :D

Roger, didnt have a look at the beach Brian wanted to fish a different spot thats why we chose the harbour, but it sounded fairly lively

Thanks Al, yeh the species list is getting there gradually, I keep forgetting to take pics of the fish for the species comp though :(

As wayne says, I'd avoid howth like the plague...your welcome to come and fish in my bath tub instead :D

Seriously though, we can head out one night this week if you fancy, just have to check what football match is on the tv tomorrow night, but may get out then if you want

Diego, fished from the pier nearest the south beach, I'd presume this is the east pier.

Fished just down past the last container, really handy to fish from the car :D

was about to ask you shamoo where you fished as you said the harbour, to me that would
be the dock where the boats berth! it's the south pier you were on,in the mouth of the river
by the sound of it. the north (smaller pier) gives good shelter, but i grew up fishing on the south pier and always preferred it. should try the large breakwater at roadstone if they still permit fishing on it. facing the town gives best results. we caught some monster congers
as kids using boat gear! great spot overall but not safe at night or alone. i'd love to fish the
breakwater sometime.....
species 2009, whiting :(, three beard rockling,.shore rockling, 5 beard rockling, flounder, lesser spotted dogfish,bullhuss, dab,bass(13), more whiting : pollock,poorcod,pouting, sea trout(the dodder!)brown trout,sea scorpion,mackerel, silver eel,
topknot:), cod, conger, corkwing wrasse, smooth hound.
