Shannon Estuary 25/1/09

#1 Post by gearoid mc s. »

People:me

Duration:3-7pm

Tide:hw @ 6.10

Weather:flat calm, freezing

Bait:mackerel heads/tails the lot!

Rigs:ledgers, 100lb mono 5/0

Results:conger 8lbs

Report:poor enough session missed one other run and that was the lot. Few weeks back I must have had 20 runs in the session but i let the bites develop instead of striking. When i finally copped on and did strike a running fish that day whatever it was kept running for about 10 yards peeling line of a 525 with drag locked down  then it crossed the other line and they both cut  have heard of three different 40'lbers coming out of here so who knows. Strange congers here they pick up the bait run for about 5 yards then drop it. If you dont strike while they are doing this they are gone. frustrating but the place is packed with them so a spot for the future despite the extremely hungry ground. Got this fellow early on with a mackerel head, fought like a demon.

Nice one!!! Well done!
I want to caught one too!

I recently asked to a couple of guys where to catch them around Wicklow, I was told Dunlaoghaire pier or in Bray harbor.
Looking forward to one of them!!!!

He's using the smokes as bait. I chose to fish further out of the estuary and 10 whiting and a dab with one over 20 cm. Now thats a poor session not one where you get a 10lb fish. The fresh water was pouring down the estuary with no tide run on flood where I was. Things have slowed down alot.

As for Ballylongford when did that place last fish well?

kilcolgan last fished well for me about 5 years ago...still think it could be good though if you hit it on the right conditions...

As for this bad session one fish is bad when the area is seriously infested with them...

fancy a bit on congering this weekend donagh :D

Hi Gearoid,

Just seen this… fine eel man and sounds like plenty more where that came from… I will be in your area soon to join that club again,

I will bell you before I get there and maybe we can have a bladder at the conger… I was driving the other night so I gave the phone to my nephew to write the text to you that I was dictating to him and thinking about it now I should have known better then to trust him as he likes a little wind up… let me know if he said anything iffy and I will bash him up again,
