Octupuss...rare catch?
Hi. New to shore angling. Been fishing Portrush..(blue pool).. almost daily for 2 weeks. I'm enjoying the Pollock, wrasse, coal fish, flounder on my light freshwater tackle/tactics but by others accounts the fishing there is very poor recently. On Sunday I caught an octopus!!..would you say that was a bit of a fluke?..or should I actively search for them in the future...(yes..I am joking..). By the way...the one I caught was about 2 feet across ....is that specimen size for rod caught octopus? This site is great for people new to sea angling. I'm using it to plan all my weekends away from now on...thanks to all who post, It's so great to be able to find out where to fish in any part of the country.

Piker / Octopus
Hi Piker
Had a few at depth in Clew Bay in 100 feet or more off Clare Island but never from the shore, definitely one worth a picture...
If you register as a member, people can send you private messages which you will find will often contain additional (useful) details on marks etc...
Enjoy...

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...
2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

Octopus
I had one fall off last year when bringing it up a rock mark in Waterford. It was about the size of a football and was like reeling in a sack. I think a mate had an orange one a few years ago from Ardmore or Helvic pier, but is was very small about twice the size of the palm of your hand. Its nice for a land lover like me to briefly see these things and ensure there are put back safely.
