Myself and Derek
11-45 to 4 pm
LW at 12 approx
Rain ,snow ,sleet and then sunshine.
3 hook flapper rigs.
Rag, Gutted Lug , mackeral and herring.
Catch Me 5 flounder, derek 1 flounder.
It was great to get out fishing again having been unable to do so over the last 3 weeks. We set of in heavy snow showers thinking we were mad. half way to the venue we decided to turn round and go back home as it was getting dangerous on the road. We set of back home only to see in the distance the sky brightening up
so being the mad anglers we are we turned around again and headed off to Portsalon. The snow turned to sleet and then to rain and road conditions improved . We arrived at the venue tackled up and as if by a miracle the rain eased of and stopped. Second cast i had a double shot of flounder 37cm and 34 cm a great start. The next three casts produced 2 more flounder 1 at 24 cm the other 22 cm. Derek then got his only fish of the day despite having a number of bites which he missed his fish being about 18 cm. Later in the afternoon i got another flounder at 20cm. After this the bites dried up the sun came out and we began to feel more comfortable in the blustery wind. Derek was using circle hooks size 1\0 could this be the reason for so many missed positive bites. I was using size 1 match hooks and seemed to connect with evey bite i had. Has anybody out there had similar experiances with circle hooks. We packed up at 4 to ensure getting home before frost set in as we live in areas where the roads are not treated and become dangerous in the bad weather we are having.

Re: Portsalon , Donegal
Jury is still out as far as I am concerned on circle hooks. For worm baits especially, they are useless. I can see there uses for presenting say a nice slim strip of fish bait or something. If they were as good if not better than standard hooks, you would see a lot on the match scene using them, fact is, they dont. A 1/0 circle hook with bait would be a tough swallow for a small flounder. Good to get a few nice flats at this time of year, well done, especially with the weather.

Re: Portsalon , Donegal
Craigo we did tip both the lug and rag baits with mackerel and sometimes herring.
RAB 525. We were fishing Knockalla end of the beach.
Also there was no striking bites on the circle hooks and the one fish caught on them was hooked in the lip.
On our previous outing i used size 2 owner circle hooks and landed 4 flounder non of which were hooked properly as all the fish just opened their mouths when on the beach and the hooks just fell out.
