Wicklow Harbour 23-01-09

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me, fishface

Duration:me, 4-9pm, fishface 7-9pm

Tide: high at 10pm approx

Weather:fine, cold westerly breeze

Bait:lug, frozen crab, squid, mack

Rigs:3 hook flappers

Results:scorpion fish, whiting, 5 beard rockling,,,,.shore rockling and whiting for fishface

Report:Finally felt well enough after the flu to head out, so with the weather looking ok i headed to Wicklow Harbour to ease myself back in. I had the place to myself for the first 3 hours so i set up at the "hotspot" at the end of the pier. I tried a feeder rig that i made up myself and i caught some fish on it during daylight , so i was happy enough with it. There were a few nice sized whiting about which were good sport on the small rod. They were fairly fat and were very lively and i was surprised when i measured them that they were only nearly 30cms(but not quite    ). Got about 7 or 8 of these decent ones and lots of others around the same length but skinnier. Best bait was lug, tipped with squid, with the frozen crab useless, and the odd fish caught on mack. Fishface arrived at about 7, with a few others all arriving within a few minutes of each other . He tried a new rig he made, a sort of pulley with 2 hooks, and caught 2 whiting on his first cast. A guy beside us caught a doggie , so out went the big mack baits ,but there were no more about. Fishface then caught a nice shore rockling, a good bit bigger than my 5 beard  . I had a good session with most casts producing fish, with a few doubles and one treble near the end. Hunger got the better of me and i started to think about a curry so that was it for the fishing   . A young lad beside me got a small codling just as i left and he took a pic for the species hunt with his mobile. He was a bit worried that the pic didnt look like a codling so let me state here and now that it was definitely a codling   .

Well done Dave that is one fat little fella in your pic. Pity you did not pick up a codling while you were out. Still good though to wet the line after a while.

Thanks lads,,took me 3 weeks to shake that flu, went back to work after a week but hadnt the energy to do anything when i got home,,,i'l certainly have more sympathy for the next person i hear has it   . Scorpion fish was tiny but still counts  . The whiting were very lively and fat, its hard to get across ,but the bigger ones gave a great scrap,,like pollock,,wouldnt even stay still for a pic  , and one even glided along the top of the water when i put him back in.
