Fish attractants.

Does anyone know of anything that can be added to bait to increase it's scent trail?

I have not tried this for sea angling. But Here is my two cents on:-


Ultrabite:-
I bought the salmon and sea-trout version of the stuff. First off, this stuff is highly acidic. Putting it onto worms will make them wriggle like crazy, but they will end up with huge boils and die very quickly. As far as fishing is concerned, this stuff does seem to increase the attractiveness to brown trout. Also, salmon jump like crazy round it , I have never caught one while using this stuff (I think they are jumping because of the acidity).

Kick'n Trout:-
Smells like sh#t. This stuff is not acidic, but it definitely turns trout off. Tried in control environment. Rip Off.

Anyone got any other ideas? Could be either commercially available stuff or even homemade stuff. I'd be interested in peoples experience with WD40.

i had one session a while back where the two baits sprayed had the only two fish of the night between myself and a friend. could be coincidence? just dont bother anymore because it's not allowed in comps... good for spraying on rigs after a session to keep the swivels from rusting up if you plan to use them again.

I have used mackeral oil and pilchard with good success with dogfish and thornies. its really does make a difference. I dont use it as much anymore because always ends up spilling and going all over the box. I have also tried that predator stuff with no real success

the only reason people go for the stuff is because of what it does, even though there are people who think it is an attractant by its self
WD40's main purpose is to break down heavy oils, displace water and leave a thin layer of viscous oil which provides lubrication and protection from moisture..

    * 50%: Stoddard solvent  (this stuff breaks down heavy oils)
    * 25%: Carbon dioxide gas (propellant )
    * 15+%: Mineral oil (light lubricating oil)
    * 10-%: Inert ingredients
There is a popular urban legend that the key ingredient in WD-40 is fish oil

when sprayed on any oily fish the oils in the flesh start to break down and get released into the water quicker, but baits need to be changed on a regular basis to keep a good scent trail going..


so that's all you need to know about WD40

jeez steve tell me how time travel works please, only kidding, do you think a good spray of wd40 into a groundbait mixture would be good, it might help the groundbait spread further/easlier maybe

i swear by WD40 when i'm pike fishing, i put plenty into the baitfish and it works a treat.
i haven't used it in seafishing yet, but will give it a try this year.
we used to inject codliver oil into worms, worked great.....

Using WD40 as an attractant is just polluting the environment.

Best thing to use is the best quality, freshest bait you can get. Unless you're chumming, and then fish oil comes into it.

Just my tuppenceworth. Anyone got any change out of that for me?

for time travel use a Flux capacitor ,
on groundbait and chum bags it would be very effective as it would thin the oils down and disperse them more so and faster...
but as mentionerd before, because it breaks down the oils you would probably have to groundbait/chum more regular as the scent wouldn't last as long in the water

IMO attractants do work. Fish oils and other similar attractants. Thats why I mentioned it. Theres plenty of attractants out there for people to try. I pm'd a web link to a few people who asked me about it before this thread was started. Thats it really.

IMHO attractants do work, Ive used Aniseed for years for Salmon that had been caught previously or stale fish and if used correctly it was very usefull, dipping flies into it never hurt youre chances either. Ive also been known to have WD40 in my bag and have also used it to effect both on fresh and salt water. Ive also experimented with various other attractants in feeders and have found that although it brings fish into youre area you still need to be using good and also fresh bait if possible. Alot of this stuff is all phsycological, and you dont need to be spending loads of money getting pheromones or other magic potions and cocktails. Use something effective like Pilchard Oil as youre scent carrier and use a good base to hold it. I use mixtures of crushed Hallibut pellets, Oats and any loose ground feed for course fishing combined with left over scraps of bait. This is normally supplemented with about two or three capfulls of Pilchard Oil. Youre only fooling youreself if you think you are gonna come across one that no one else is using and is gonna give you the upper hand cos there is no one in particular. Pick any smelly fish oil and use it effectively so it leaches into the water at a rate that is consistent with the tide run you are fishing in
