Ennereilly 23-January-2009

People: me, Diego
Duration: 20.00 to 1:30 (approx)
Tide: High tide, turning, falling (http://www.irishtimes.com/weather/tides.html)
Weather: Clear, little bit windy, cold, bit of surf
Bait: Lug, squid, herring
Results: Whiting, rockling

Set up at about 8 o'clock, to the south of the river - which had moved about half-way down the beach and was running parallel to it, so effectively we were casting out over the river. Picked up about 30 whiting, half-a-dozen rockling.

At one point was hauling in whiting three at a time, some doubles, and got a double rockling too.

Lug was most effective, but the whiting took the squid too. Nothing would touch the herring, even when used with lug as a cocktail.

Diego got about three bigger sized whiting, the biggest is shown (30cm ish).

Weirdly, it wasn't that cold when we started out, and I even took off my fleece and hat as I was too hot. Later in the evening, the wind picked up a bit and it dropped below zero. Not as cold as some of our other sessions, though.

Anyways, not a bad session and great to get out of the house on a Friday evening!

Word of warning: If you're not familiar with the river at Ennereilly then be careful at night as it can move up to .5 KM from the last time you saw it - you could end up going into it in the dark! Take your time and bring a good light.

It was a nice session even if we didn't catch anything too exciting.
The 30 cm whiting was a surprise, it's the biggest whiting that I ever caught on this beach.

Uvox is so right about the "Word of warning". I had a petrol lantern that I borrowed from a friend, I'm sure that without it I would have fallen into the river. Scary stuff!!!

Well at least some of them are starting to grow up! I wonder will some of them return next year as monsters? Good session lads.
