In my opinion the Ian Golds are the best because if its simplicity . A friend of mine got a SALT one recently and upon setting it up he broke one of the support arms not a good first outing with it!

i got an xmas pressie of the salt tripod, used it last week for the 1st time on a high up rock mark which was pretty windy and it stood upto it. its heavier than most of the others and might be a pain to put together in the dark. also, the main leg is like a knife, very sharp. i got a nice little cut from it when i was putting it up.

for that reason alone i wouldnt recommend it, BUT it does seem fairly sturdy.

cheers for that. that would seem to put them on par with the salt although the salt is a little harder to pick up with the rods on it to retreat from/follow after the tide because of the cross struts.

Hi Lads, I got myself a team Daiwa aluminium tripod last Feburary, this thing looked the buisness, it was going great for a while but for the last 2 or 3 months the rod holding part started to wobble, on closer inspection the part is only like a cast and has sheared so htis means that the 2 rods keep on going backward or forward. I have really looked after this thing, not impressed. I think as i read the posts the Ian Golds is definately worth checking out..

Last Friday i bought the salt one, i have to say i'm looking forward to use it. Set it up in the kitchen and i am very impressed with the whole package. it seems to much more sturdy than Ian Golds (as i have one also), it does that longer to set up and heavier, i don't think anyone meantioned that you get a bag with this and an over the shoulder strap on it for carrying it. it was cheaper than Ian Golds not by much but i wasn't going to buy another one from my experience from it. they have very sharp legs as posted before but overall i have to say it seems better than Ian Golds stand, but the truth will come when i first use it and have to pack up at night time. Now i just have to get out. Also this stand seems that it will stand up to the high winds. Tempted to go fishing now pity i have soccer training at 9-10.30pm and up for work at 6.20am maybe go fishing straight from training and into work. Cant see the lads being to happy me smelling of fish at my meeting in the morning :lol:

Two words....1/ Time 2/ Rust

When the Salt one has been around for 25 years and sold as many as Ian Golds.

The Salt ones have been rusting within no time.....nothing to rust on an Ian Golds stand.

just to throw another option out there...

i have a breakaway tripod, for the last few years, still going strong, very light, but very sturdy too, cant fault it (so far)

i was on ballycotton pier monday(blanked) and the wind was pretty strong. the guy next to me had an Ian Golds Match tripod and it kept blowing over. eventually he hung a bucket of water from it for stability. my Salt didnt blow over once. still not sure if id buy another one tho as they are heavy compared to others and the cuts from them can be nasty but in the wind their pretty good.
another small thing i dont like about them is the hook for hanging a spare trace is very big. i usually use a size 4 swivel and it wont fit on the hook. i need to hang a large snap swivel from the hook, then the trace swivel from that. its not a major thing but still a little annoying.

I have had a couple of tripods myself and I have to say the Ian Golds one is the best one so far. It has blown over a couple of times on me but I like it because its light, I had the Imax/salt one and it was a beast to carry. I got a wee telescopic bad boy for my bait tray that seems spot on.

With the Salt tripod you are carrying that bucket of water with you always :lol:

the goldsy hasnt blown over on me ever, had a look at the salt one on the weekend an i must say it looked flimsy and poorly made

eric i seem to remember a session not so long ago when both our stands blew over at the same time :evil:

must admitt i bring a bucket with my leads in it and often hang it under the tripod i bring it anyway for surf beaches to carry bait, rigs, leads ect very handy when your up to you nuts in water :wink:

weight is my main concern ,that alone would make me use a goldsy tripod :mrgreen:

have had ian golds match for the past 5 years and its as good as the day i bought it. would not hesitate to recomend
it to anyone
