18/01/09 Killiney Beach

#1 Post by Dave »

People: Me

Duration:3:00 - 6:30

Tide: High at 5:00

Weather: Strong SW wind with some light showers

Bait: Lug and Razor

Rigs: Pulley Pennel

Results: Rockling and Cod

Report:

I was determined to get a few hours fishing in this weekend despite the poxy weather, I wasn't too optimistic with the high winds but I figured Killiney would be fairly sheltered so I decided to give it a go. When I got there I realised that it wast quite as sheltered as I hoped but was still fishable. The high winds made spotting bites difficult so I decided to only use the heavier rod, rigged up with a pulley pennel and a big lug / razor bait and cast as far as I could, which isn't really that far . It was starting to look like it might be the first blank of the year but then I saw a little rattle on the rod and reeled in a Shore Rockling (I think), encouraged by this I decided to stick it out a little longer. I was glad I did as it wasn't long until I got an unmissable bite but by the time I picked up the rod the line was slack, I was sure I had missed it but I reeled in and thankfully the fish was still on. I was delighted when I saw a nice plump codling appear in the surf. and surprised when it tipped the scales at 4lb 2oz. I was tempted to bring him home for tea but decided to put him back to fight another day. I stayed a little longer to see if there were any more cod about but I didn't get any more bites so I decided to call it a night.

Cheers guys, I must admit before I landed that codling I was having one of those 'what the hell am I doing out it this weather' moments and wondering why I hadn't just stayed at home in front of the TV and cracked open a few beers, but once I saw that fish in the surf I knew the numb fingers and toes were worth it and was glad that I'd stuck it out and endured the poxy weather.

Lovely fish alright, you don't see that many these days off that beach or Greystones, there used to be plenty about, fair play for putting it back.
