co. antrim, 3 marks 1 day. fri 16th jan 09

#1 Post by Al and Jordan »

People: me, jordan, round ourway and francis

Duration: 4pm - 4am

Tide: all states

Weather: dry 15mph winds picking up to gale force into saturday

Bait: rag, lug, mack, squid, herring, sand eel and mussle sausages

Rigs: various

Results: loads

Report: we had arranged to meet up with round ourway and francis at cushendun in the evening. so i picked up jordan from school and we headed straight to garron point to deep spin some sand eel through the kelp beds in search of some big pollock :D we arrived before dark and were met by a pretty big swell. the tide was on the drop and the spray was breaking over the biggest rock so a bit of caution was in order :| :| as expected we lost a good few rigs and i was the only one to hook into a fish. i could'nt keep him out of the kelp and once he got his head down it was game over for me     i was absolutly gutted. if i had of landed him i would say he would have easily been my biggest ever shore caught fish to date     but thats the chance you take when you fish in the kelp
we packed up and headed soon after to meet the lads at cushendun for 7.30pm. by 8pm we were on the beach and fishing. jordans first cast got him a coalie and my first cast resulted in me hauling 20lb of kelp and weed onto the beach 40yards from where i had cast   so we moved 50 yards up the beach to get away from the weed. i'm not sure if francis and round ourway got anything but after about 40 mins the vote was made that we all move location and head to waterfoot pier where we might have a more productive session.
so by 9.30pm we were on the pier and fishing. we were the only ones there so we had the pick of where we wanted to fish. i think francis was the first into a fish landing a nice 5 bearded rockling, then round ourway got a double of flounder and coalie. it was a bit fast and furious after that with every one getting in on the action. i'm not exactly sure who got what, but a good mix of coalies, flounder, codling, whiting, pollock and rockling was had by all. francis even had a good dab at the end before he and round ourway headed for home around midnight. i'm not sure if i've left anything out that the lads got, but if i have i'm sure you'll post and correct me :D :D   . by now the wind was at gale force and my tripod was blowen over 4 or 5 times. so i packed it away and we fished on just holding our rods to feel bites. it began to get a bit silly with a shoal of coalies hammering our baits just feet from the edge. we were pulling them up in 2s and 3s. we had a wee competition between ourselves to see how many we could catch without re baiting. needless to say i got whipped by jordan who got 12 of em before he needed to bait up again     like i said, i'm not sure just how many the other lads got in total in the end, but jordan ended up with 35 coalies and 18 whiting. and i ended with 28 coalies, 5 whiting, 2 pollock and a wee codling. nothing bigger than 25cm but great sport all the same. the odd thing was that neither jordan or i got any flatties of any description but francis and round ourway were pulling them up in 2s :? :? :? :? :? and jordan must have spent a good 2hrs fishing the spot the other lads were getting them at. he was drooling at the mouth when francis came over with his dab      but it was'nt ment to be      . we wrapped it up at 4am after jordan got blown off his feet for the second time as it was starting to get a wee bit too scary even for us      but it was an excellent trip with good company that we both thoroughly enjoyed :D :D

Thanks Al, but I picked some bait up from Francis. Thanks for offering. Looks like I will be going Sunday evening for a few hours. Might try Donaghadee Pier, anyone got any pointers or want to join me. It will be the first time I've been to that mark.
