unhooking deep hooked flatfish
there have been a few questions about hooks and what to use when targeting flatfish and how to remove a hook that has been swallowed by a flatfish...
well look no further..

[edit: update]9-7-10
i'll include a pic of what i use with dimensions
this was made with a grip lead wire, when straightened its about 8" long
sorry for pic quality, but you get the general idea

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
get a clothes hanger
cut out your desired length with a pliers - about 20cm
twist the top end over about a cm with the pliers - for your hook part
then use electrical tape to wrap numerous times onto a piece of wood or the like for a handle - hey presto youve an unhooky thing
another point i would mention - is that there is great potential on the retrieve of the hook back out through the mouth to hook onto the gills again - particularly if the hook was set between the gills and not between the gills and the gill cover
in this case it could be better to feed the unhooky thing - back through the mouth and place the hook(which remains free the other side of the gill cover) on it and feed it back out through the mouth on the unhooky thing avoiding snagging the gills again
good video to show the marvels of this amazing technology instead of shredding small flats gills and stomachs

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
Try and make it from the thinnest wire possible about the sizre of the wire in a grip lead is ideal. You can get a welding wire about that size and it will do the job. I think the coat hanger is a bit too large especially if you are using it on very small flounder, but it is an invaluable tool to have. Make sure you wrap the end with something as I have lost loads of them in the sand.

i have caught a shed load of flounder and the coat hanger has worked fine - its just something handy round the house - by all means get thinner wire if you want
however i use the unhooky thing on dogs and rounds also as a disgorger and youd need the extra strength for that also

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
alot easier and faster to use the end of an artists paint brush of pen or similar object and takes onlya few seconds simply by putting it in the flats mouth grab the snood and twist

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
could you elaborate more gd - sounds like your using the brush as a standard disgorger - very hard to use on smaller flats

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
I was pegged beside a sound fella in courtown that showed me how to use this method. He use's a chopstick just put it in the mouth of the fish, hold it against the snood line, dont wrap around it. Holding the chop stick and snood line together just twirl the fish gently and it just pops off, worked everytime for me. I used my disgorger in place of the chopstick. Hard to explain really better to see in practice. Hope it helps some bit.
Long time no sea.

Re: unhooking deep hooked flatfish
use that method all the time with flats
in over a year have only seen 1 fish bleed
far cheaper than cutting off hooks all the time
note it has to be the timber chop stick not the plastic one
the hook has to stick in the chop stick to alow the hook to come out of the fish
and not rehook it
