Cork Harbour Mark, 15/01/2009

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me,thighlines, rockhunter, hughcronin

Duration: 10:30-01:30 or thereabouts

Tide: 20:35

Weather: calm

Bait: crab, lug, mack, razor

Rigs: usual

Results: not sure, a whiting to thighlines and rockhunter anyway.

Report: seeing as no-one else has written this yet....

Little impromptu session with me tagging along with the lads to a mark we were advised had been fishing well - not for us unfortunately. Nightmare for me, cast 5 times (too busy chatting and retying shock leaders) and snagged and broken twice and birdied once (think the birdie was because my line was loose on the spool after the previous break off) and my other two casts only just managed to pull free.
The others managed to stay snag free, so no idea what I was doing
Anyway, good to meet Shane (and Pat who popped down for a little while) for the first time and good chatting anyway, even if the fishing was bad.

I was getting snagged too - lost three rigs and a shockleader
I was getting a few bites alright but it was likely to have been small whiting pulling at the bigger baits - when I tried scaling down to three hook flappers with size 1 or 2 hooks I ended up getting snagged. A lot of effort for one small whiting.

We were fishing it on the ebb - maybe it might have been more productive on the rising tide.

Sounds like ye were having fun lads!!! I fished ballinwilling yesterday, first cast got a ball of weed the size of a boat that emptied my reel, second cast was much the same so got fed up of re-spooling and went to Monatrea instead. Not a great session but not terrible either - 1 flounder around the 2 pound mark, 1 rockling not sure which kind and about a dozen whitting of various sizes. Went to Ringaskiddy tonight to see if there were any bass around and nearly put the feckin power out for the whole of Cork!! Put a 6oz an a pulley rig CLEAN over the high tension cables :D :D :D I was fishing braid an i wasnt to sure about the conductive properties of it so i cut the line rather carefully an called it a night!! Fishin is hard work at the moment!!!
Ah yes, 1974, The Cod Wars. I hated Cod so of course I signed up straight away.

Lads are things in Cork harbour that bad at the moment or is it a case of guys just getting out when they can and not fishing the right tides, areas etc. ???
Really wanted to wet a line this week at some point (first week back after another enforced lay off   :) ) and Cobh,Monkstown, Ringaskiddy are the areas i was planning to use to ease myself back in so to speak.

I think we probably just fished that mark at the wrong time - lots of whiting elsewhere in the harbour and the occasional small codling.

I've found the last three hours of a rising tide to be the best at that spot.
