Spinning reel for braid.

#1 Post by liamdenn »

Hi All
Just a quick one. I use the mike ladle 4sure spin with the Shimano Stradic 4000GTM which I find grand. MY pal wants the same rod but a cheaper reel to load with braid. Now I know from my own experience that a cheap reel and braid are not always a happy marriage but can anyone recommend a reel that is up to the job and dosnt break the bank?
Many thanks
Liam

Hi

put some old mono (on a reasonable tension) as backing onto the reel before you lay on the braid and this will help - I am using a standard Shimano small spinning reel loaded with 200 m of 20 lb PowerPro and I've had no problems. I have noticed that adjusting the drop to the weight of the lure in casting does help in avoiding wind knots. A bit of practice and timing... The reel I am using is no longer available, all the Shimanos now start with an "S", but they are a good brand and reasonably tough / reliable.

Would agree with Kieran. I tape the spool rather than put on the old mono. Just another option.

Thanks guys, I tend to do the same , putting mono on spool and laying some tape on it first. The thing is though what do you guys think this chap can get away with. The cheapest reel that will handle braid?
Cheers

If your mate is looking for a decent reel that is a bit cheaper than the Stradic but still with good line lay so you can use braid with it, I'd suggest looking at the Shimano Exage. I assume that if your mate intends getting the same Mike Ladle rod he will be getting it from Veals, if thats the case then he could get an Exage for about €40-50 with the exchange rate.

i got the shimano exage 4000 in the half way for 60 i think, i got it with the 10" ugly stik lite and paid 120. i saw them cheaper in the uk but was only saving about 10 after P&P so i decided to get it here. for such a small saving id rather buy locally as its easier if theres any problems with them.
