if you had 50 quid to spend on bass plugs....

New to this plugging for bass from the shore... and I'm planning to buy some plugs for later this year, so if you had 50 quid (euros) to spend on a little selection, which ones would you go for?

I already have a Chug Bug and a Yo-Zuri Mag.

Are there particular colors that win out on average over others (e.g., sandeel shades)?

I plan to use them off Wicklow and Wexford shore marks,

Not sure what is the best to use have only done a bit of plugging.For your €50 you'll get great value at the fishing show you'll get them for half price. Not sure when its on this year think its feb.

Hi uvox,
for what its worth i use the storm jointed original thundersticks for fishing shallow water.They only dive 3 to 6inches,brill tail action,hard to get though .Also the maria chase are excellant shallow runners also.For fishing to 3 ft the yo zuri crystal minnows are highly recommended.After the 3 ft rapala j11 or 13,slivers to 10ft,also the abu terminators are an excellant choice to have in the box.Another lure i've been using the last year or so are the bass bandits[latex with lead head].
Don't forget the ould red gills with bubble float,excellant when fishing early in the season,along with flying c's and any sandeel imitation metal lures,the list is endless,but try getlures to cover shallow to deep waters an natural colours and a few bright ones for brighter days and you won't go far wrong and sure you have the aile sliders which are deadly

aile magnets, yo zuris, abu tormentors, shallow feeds, rapala x raps, tide minnows, etc Theres loads. You can buy tormentors and jointed tormentors for €5. The average other ones are around €14 but many can be got cheaper on US websites. Then some of em are around €25 like the shallow feeds. Main thing as the boys said is to have ones for different depths. Action is important. Also look at the casting weights in relation to the tackle you are using.

my favourite lure,
SHAKESPEARE DEVIL'S OWN - BLUE PILCHARD ,
But ....CHANGE THE HOOKS TO V M C TREBLES
a great lure, and being 15cm long, it wont take mackerel in the summer.
Fish it in to breaks of mack, the bass will be under them mopping up injured fish and sprat..
Its also cheap so if you loose one or two you wont mind,
tie it using a loop knot

i got a few on ebay a while back but havent used them yet, got 5 for about 8euro after P&P from hong kong but they can take 3 weeks to arrive. they look pretty good but cant be sure till i try them out, well worth a go for that price. also theres abu and rapala lures on ebay hong kong too for 4-5euro but P&P can be around 5-6euro, worth it if you buy a couple as they usually do a combined postage.

Saw the tormentors on an irish website for €5 and the jointed ones same. As regards colours everone has their own favourites. For me its mackerel and sandeel colours mainly. Some wexford lads I know swear by clear plugs and 'goldfish' colours. Also we should mention the old toby and kilty lures - spoons still work! You will get spoons cheap at the Dublin show. Eurotackle from Dundalk woz doin somethin like 8 for €10 last year.

Be sure to include one or two surface lures that are almost entirely white or almost entirely transparent.

You could get your contacts in the US to send you some "Super Spooks", made by Heddon or Zara, depending on where you buy them. These are one of the original surface lures. If you can get white or transparent, that's even better. They're also inexpensive. Maybe $6 dollars a throw. You won't loose as many surface lures as divers, so 2 or 3 would be a good start.

As others have said, try to get one or two Yo-Zuri (Duel) Aile Magnet. Again, prodominanty white colours are particularly good in the summer when the water is clear.

Not really. River2Sea, Heddon and <secret tell-you-but-have-to-kill-you make> all do excellent lures for between 8 and 12 euros. Granted they're not all available here but postage from France is fairly reasonable. You could probably get 4 or 5 very good lures for 50 quid.

Here's another tip. Have a look on eBay. You can often get excellent second-hand lures from France or Japan. I've done this before when I couldn't get the models I wanted here. They're good as new. Last year I god a few as-new lures of a very reputable make for about 1/2 the price a well-known tackle shop in Dublin sells them for.

To be honest, I know someone who has caught bass on a carrot. If you spray the carrot white, that's probably even better. No messing.

but on cheaper lures DO change the hooks,
i have had fish bend out cheap trebles....
again ebay for packs of 100 vmc or other makes cheap.
N.B. buy your shore hooks in 100's too and save a small fortune

Some very good suggestions there, the only thing I would add is to try to get yourself different types of lures to fish at different depths and ranges. As you mentioned you already have a couple of surface lures it might be worth spending the €50 on a couple of plugs to fish at different depths and also a couple of metal lures (kilty, toby or german sprat) for those times when you need a bit more distance. You won't go far wrong with any of the suggestions the guys have made, you will however probably end up spending more than €50 on lures, buying lures can be addictive. I still have loads of lures that I haven't even taken out of their boxes.

I stumbled across that a while ago and wasn't sure if it was for real or not, I guess it is but I suppose the is no reason why it shouldn't work even if it is a little unusual. All the same I still think I rather have a bit of high tech plastic on the end of my line rather than a vegetable.
