Multiplier tuning

I got a mag 525 at christmas and I'm only now getting a chance to use it this weekend :roll: . Having never used a multiplier before im absolutely clueless. Can anybody recommend a site that will show me, in detail, how to set it up for a beginner i.e. how to apply red rocket fuel to the bearings etc. I've been to neil mackellows site but its not very helpful. Also any tips on using the thing would be massively appreciated. Thanks.

i am sure you will have more questions. don't be afraid to ask.

to tune the reel you need to open it up. flush out the oil in the bearings and replace with red rocket fuel. the bearings are inside the spool. flush out the other 2 bearings on either side of the 'spool spindle' and then leave them alone! these do not need oil! this is important. because the mag settings on the 525 lean on the fast side you are best to under fill the spool with line. even 5mm from the top is not too much to begin with or days when the wind is howling. keep the breaks on slow setting. only try backing them off when you get proficient at casting with the reel and know what the outcome will be!!!! persevere with it. it really is a great ree.l

Cheers lads. I have a better idea about it know. Just a couple more questions should I use lighter petrol to flush the bearings or is there another way. Also will it run slower if I flush the two bearings(the ones not in the spool) and not apply redrocket fuel M.b3? Thanks.

clean out the bearing with petrol or lighter fluid. put them into a container(old film cannister is good!) and put enough in so the bearings are submerged. the bearings outside of the spool, if filled with rocketfuel/ oil, will slow the reel down too much- Neil Mackellow tells people to just leave them alone! i prefer to remove the oil/grease. again each to there own. when putting oil in the bearings(spool bearings), submerge them in a large spoon filled wth rocketfuel, slowly heat with a candle. this will force the air out of the bearings giving an even oil coverage. when the air bubbles stop coming out of the bearings- job done! wipe excess oil off in tissue paper and u'r ready to go.

Thanks m.b3. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I knew you were supposed to flush the bearings and apply rocket fuel but it was how you do this that was getting me. Thanks.

hope it all works out? i spent a good year makin a mess of my first multiplier. all i needed was someone to piont me in the right direction- would've saved a lot of heartache! just giv iz a shout if anything crops up.

Tried the multiplier the weekend. Very impressed I liked it a lot. Didnt get any birdsnest im happy to say, although I could feel it just about going at times but Im sure this was due to my horribly bad line lay(found that a bit tricky have to work on it).

Anyway my question is what the hell is end tension. Ive heard if you set it wrong it can destroy the bearings so im a bit worried. I set it so the spool moves back and forth a tiny bit ("discernible end play" I believe :roll: ). Is this alright or should i be doing something differently. Thanks.

Just a word of advise I used to get carried away with tuning my multiplyes from reading about reels being silent and smooth on the cast.

I only tune them up 2 or 3 times a year and they work better and cast farther than when it was too free not that I couldnt control it, just that it used to make the reel work better and easier to control.

I went through the phase of heating the bearings with baby oil on a spoon with the black 6500 ct and it worked back then but these days the bearings are much better and I tried the baby oil again last year out of curiosoty on the 525 mag and all it did was turn my reel into a ball of line which was verry frustrating.

I heat them like mb3 with the rocket fuel and it makes life much easier................

how 'ye! end tension(or lack of?!?!) is found by slowly winding the silver knob(ehem!) tighter. keep tightening and moving the spool from side to side as u go until you have about 2 or 3 millimetres of movement(on the spool). you can just about tighten it up and then ease off. it dosen't have to be perfect- your reel will run fine if it's almost right! now get on with the fishing!!!
