Fishing Trip Boo-Boos: To Avoid

#1 Post by uvox »

Here's mine...

Arrive at beach at night having driven 120 miles to find that rod bag contains the butt end of a Daiwa Sandstorm and the tip end of a Grey's GRX-S. Result: choice language and no fishing.

Remember what they ask you at the airport: Did you pack that bag yourself?

And are you sure what's in it.

Forgetting to bring the boots for sock foot waders.

Only bringing shorts to wear under waders. (squeak squeak)

Drive home. Go to take two rods with abu 6500 premium mags attached out of car -realise they are standing against the wall back at the beach car park. Drive back and who knows how or why but they are still there. Phew!

My best was realising after driving all the way to Dingle for a couple of days fishing that I had left every form of jacket and waterproof back in Dublin neatly hanging in the hall (I'd deliberately put them there the night before so I wouldn't forget them) and to make things worse it just started to rain as I arrived in Dingle. I ended up having to make do with some cheap ones I picked up in the town, needless to say I spent the next couple of days being pretty cold and wet but still fishing.

i forgot to bring a spare rod once for a friend so we had to "share" the one

i forgot the bait another time. ended up pickin the limpets???? from the rocks. the little yellow and back things inside the shells. i got 2 edible sized whiting on them tho so it wasnt too bad.

i forgot my knife another time. i ended up trying to sharpen a shell off the rocks to use. that wasnt too bad as i had a nail clippers for clipping the ends from traces but i had mack, razor and lug for baits. the shell cut the razor fine but made a right mess of the mack. ended up not using it.

considering ive only been fishing about 6 months and bait fishing 3 months thats a pretty bad record.

Leaving my rig box in the Jeep for the second session of the Masters after the best part of a mile walk to my peg chafed to bits in ill fitting waders. God bless Poogie O'Reilly who I was pegged beside for his generosity on the rig front.

forgot the headlamp a few times

closed the boot on a few rods

pulling for a break and got one in the last third of a rod!

dropping your rig bag on high rocks - especially after spending over 2 hours doing traces up the night before

no change of clothes after being completely saturated

not putting petrol in the car and it conking out 15mins out the road

exhaust falling off - twice

out the road an hour and realising the bait is in the fridge still

im sure theres plenty more

Wearing all your clothes under waders ( non-breatheable) at the height of the summer, when you have a few miles to walk.

I sweated so much my head started to spin, pure dehydration.

Best I ever saw Brian - your rig wallet drifting away on the tide!
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

Boycie helpfully illustrated something else to avoid at the RNLI meet last night ...
