Purteen Rocks and Harbour, Achill, Mayo 28.12.2008

#1 Post by kieran »

People: Mans, Bruce & Myself

Duration: 3 hours (felt longer) 3-6 pm

Tide: HW around 5 pm

Weather: idle wind - not bothered to go around you, prefer to go right through you!

Bait: black lug, sandeel, turkey liver and heart (nto my idea!), mackerel, spinners

Rigs: various

Results: feck all, small coalfish saving blanks all around

Report: Had to get away from all the toys so blagged off to Achill for a few hours of brilliant sunshine and a bitterly cold easterly wind (which got very blustery around 4 pm for some unknown reason). Watched one lunatic in a RIB get blown westward as he failed to start his motor outside the harbour - he managed to row back, just!

Tried the west facing rocks seeking depth given the unseasonally bright conditions so lumped it over to the far side of purteen harbour and missed a stonking take on a spinner shortly after arriving - got pulled into the snag at the mouth of the gulley for those familiar with the mark and there was no come back. A very weird long fast smooth take, not a pollack or coalfish, big fish, pulled line away off the drag, could not stop the bugger... Mans has a similar take in the harbour around two hours later. Was wondering about seal afterwards but no sign of them anywhere.... Was so busy the rest of the day with the baits I respooled two reels with new braid in preparation for 2010... very pleasant really once out of the idle wind. Mans tried the turkey liver which elicited bites immediately but stuff was impossible to keep on a hook and had neglected to bring the finger gauze with me.

Still it is an interesting use for next year's giblets!

Time spent fishing is never time wasted...

2015 targets - a triggerfish, a specimen bass, a three bearded rockling to complete the set and something big and toothy from certain north Mayo deep water marks

make ya wonder about the biggie that got away....would there be any chance a big conger would take a spinner. guess it will be fire for the imagination. had a similar exsperience a good few years back on the outside of dun laoghaire pier , wouldve been waterskiing only for the break
Species....good film.....I'll get my coat
