Could someone please explain to me what the term "scratching" means, and what a scratching rig consists of?
Thanks.

Scratching and home venue promotion...........
As far as I know its when your match fishing in close or out far for smaller species with delicate presentation lighter rods line swivels hooks............
The best scratching rod I seen is the conoflex source which I tried out a few years ago on Clones beach Wexford while fishing with Richard Gormely from Kerry he has some selection of rods.....
I have used scratching tatics on my doorstep in Shannon town to great affect nobody fishes these venues ever and its good fun during the evening to go across the road and catch fish with out traveling too far and I have a few different venues within a mile of each other I catch flounder occasional dab silver eel smelt odd whiting during the winter from the breakwater and a big dirty slob trout thrown in now and again all in all a mixed venue.
I start typing about scratching and end up promoting my home venue.
There are plenty of mullet some evenings to be seen arount the breakwater in Shannon town and it can be a dangerous venue due to the tide cutting you off during a springer.
There is also some reports from the 80's of thornbacks and huss caught from the main channel from the end of the breakwater as were only a few miles from Aughinis Alumina which is a good venue whenever they open it up for fishing competitions etc..
