3 Fishermen missing

#1 Post by ROADRUNNER »

Hi guys ive just heard on the radio that 3 fishermen are missing on the west coast. They left Killybegs on wednesday and they havent been seen or heard of since, The Coastguard have called them by radio all day and have sent the Cestna patrol plane up looking for them but to no avail. There will be a full scale search tomorrow and hopefully they will be found.

God bless there souls if they are not.

The boat MFV Banrion na dTonn (Queen of the waves) a 46ft timber potting boat was on its way to its new home port having just been bought in Fanad. She developed a fuel problem on route and had pulled in to Killybegs to sort the problem before again heading on her passage. It is hoped that she is sheltering in a bay somewhere but hopes are fading at this stage.

There is a small photo and details of her listed in a for sale ad here:http://www.irishskipper.net/skipper-images/pages/june08/june-36-41.pdf

thats great news. however, theres one thing that bothers me.

No contact had been made with the trawler

and yet further on it says that the guy was an experienced fisherman. did he have a vhf on the boat?

Yes he had a VHF but the boat ended up 50 miles offshore due to the engine problem it encountered therefore the boat was outside of "Sea Area A1" which is upto 30 miles, the range of VHF communications between a boat and a coast station. It would have required an MF radio to be guaranteed communications at that distance.

This is something worth remembering for anglers who venture to offshore wrecks, it is also the reason that charter boats are limited to 30nm from land in Ireland.

Guys lets learn from this can you imagine what the outcome would have been if it wasnt a small trawler ????

vhf or mobile phone wont work to far from shore altogether perhaps it is worth investing in an EPERB ???

I bet you one thing those 3 fishermen and there wives wont be worrying about the rescision to day.
