Re: Flat fish identity?
possibly a dab ,looks like the colours have faded a bit ,was it out of the water for long ? the spots around the flesh at the edge of the fins look very regular like they would on the body of a dab ,but the lateral line doesn't look curved enough over the pectoral fin .
If someone shows you a mark to fish, respect it and dont pass it of as one of your own, dont tell every man and his dog about it.

Re: Flat fish identity?
Dabs are rough all over if stroked from tail to head, looks like a flounder to me mate, slightly rough along the lateral line, smooth elsewhere.

Re: Flat fish identity?
How white was his belly?
typically dabs would have an off white belly were the flounders is as white as snow (it uses daz)

DAB
Go up to your Menu Bar and click on Page. In the drop-down menu click on Zoom then on 400% this will give a clear picture showing the rough skin of a dab.

Re: Flat fish identity?
Have to agree with JP and Gearoid. We get a sh*t load of dab up our way most of the year and that don't look like any dab I've ever seen. Easiest way of telling a Dab is the pronounced curve in the lateral line above the pectoral fin. see below.

Re: Flat fish identity?
I would say flounder as i cant see the pronounced curve in the lateral line as in pic of dab below.

Re: Flat fish identity?
im not being funny lads, but these questions on flats come up every week, its not that hard to spot the difference
dabs- usually beige in colour sometime with minor alterations, mimics sand grains, has rough skin throughout the body when felt from tail to head. the lateral line takes a sharp semicircle turn at the pectoral fin, underside is transparent white
flounder- smooth skin throughout, a ridge of nodules run along the lateral kine to the head, coloration varies dependent upon the habitat, underside is bright white
plaice- pronounced orange/yellow spots throughout, often apparent on the underside of the fish's fins, underside is like the dab, transparent white but with a pearly tinge. small globules surround the lateral line around the head, the rest of the body is smooth

Re: Flat fish identity?
Yeah, I'm sure it's a flounder too now. To be honest it was the color that threw us first - very very pale with orangey spots. But then you can get almost white ones too, right?
Btw - Plaice also have a more diamond shape than the other two.
