Spiddal Pier, Galway 03.12.08

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: Vinnycorrigan & myself

Duration: 19:00-23:00

Tide: HT @ 20:54

Weather: Torrential rain and wind from SW force 7-8

Bait: Mackerel & Squid

Rigs: 2 hook pat, booms, running ledger, 2 up 1 down, 1 up 1 down

Results: Pouting, Coalfish & Pollack

Report: After checking the weather reports decided to head for Spiddal to have some shelter from the wind. Set up in driving rain which only stopped once we got home  Vinny was in first with a pouting his first of the year :) then he had another nice pouting followed by another i was having no joy, but i took comfort in a warm cup of coffee from my new crow proof flask :P there was a swell running but thankfully it brought no weed with it and we were able to hold bottom comfortably with some spray coming over the wall reminding us just how strong it was blowing. Then a quick change of tack and i was finally off the mark with a coalie followed shortly after by another two coalies then a pollack. The rain was coming down in Biblical proportions as we were packing up and we were glad to be getting out of it as foolishly neither of us were wearing wellies and our boots were filling up with water as the constant rain began to soak through. Nice fishing with Vinny and we'll be back to try the mark again in better conditions.

well done conor, nice to see you were rewarded for braving the elements. no matter how cold and soggy you get it always feels worth while so long as you bag a few fish :D :D :D :D

Any size to the fish Conor?
Its called fishing, not catching. If it was called catching it wouldn't be fishing!

Fair play to you for sticking it out in that weather and getting a few fish.
I headed out to a beach last night - but with horizontal rain and gale force winds I thought better of it and went home

Cheers lads :) we got lucky with the weed not turning up and the pier being fishable due to the wind direction.

Hi Kevin not great sizes i was hoping the swell might have brought in some bigger fish. The biggest pouting was about 24cm the coalies and pollack were between 30-33cm. Might be worth a shot when it settles in a day or two.

Great fun even with the conditions. Definitely have to hit that mark again on a clear night.
My bones are still soaked.

Thanks Conor as always.

Hi Kevin would love to give Silverstrand a shot but can't make it this evening unfortunately, waiting on a shipment of horses. Let me know how you get on tight lines :)
