Report: I hadn’t intended to go fishing but I got a PM from Pat in the early afternoon to say that he was heading out for a session on one of the East Cork beaches and that I was welcome to join him. I had some lug left over from the weekend so thought I may as well give it a bash as I seem to be on a bit of a roll in terms of bass fishing at the moment
When I arrived Pat had already been there a couple of hours without a bite – I set up two rods both with 3/0 pennel pulley rigs baited with lug/razor. There was a weakish surf although better than I expected given the northerly winds. Then Pat got the first fish of the night, a small whiting. We were having a chat for a while, Pat went to check his rods – I then noticed a sharp knock on one of mine – struck and had a fish on – it was putting up a good fight so I reckoned it had to be a bass. Sure enough it was – I have lost my fish measuring ruler and forgot to bring my tape measure but Pat obliged with his tape – it was 45 cm. So I was delighted with that – a bass on the first cast again
About 30-40 minutes later I noticed a little movement on the tip of the other rod, picked it up and waited. I struck as soon as I felt a more solid bite. Again there was a strong pull on the line – this time it was a 46 cm bass
So the pressure was on Pat now – maybe 20 minutes later Pat got his fish – a fine 48 cm bass which he promptly released.
About half an hour later I noticed small twitches on my rod tip again – I picked it up but felt nothing – I laid the rod back onto the stand and shortly afterwards the twitches started again, then there was a firmer pull, I grabbed the rod and struck into another fish. This one was a 44 cm bass
Pat had given up hope of catching me now
I stayed on for another hour hoping to make it to five but there were no more bites.
So a good session with five bass between us and Pat had the best fish of the day
