Codling!!!!

#1 Post by Century Man »

What's the story with codling this year??? No show so far so to speak. Not even tiddlers.

South Wexford beaches have not thrown up any so far that I am aware of.

Out of the last 3 sessions we have only had school bass, dogs and flounder.

Is ANYONE hooking???

there is plenty of tiddlers around up here in dublin
no sign of anything decent as yet.

huge numbers of mini bass on most of the wicklow/arklow beaches  hopefully they will get a chance to mature.

think i might have to launch the boat next chance i get in search of an elusive CODLING.even if it means a trip to kilmore

i heard of a few decent cod coming from the rosstoonstown stretch dont know if there is any truth in it tbh.

john.....

Hi John,

I fished Rostoonstown few weeks back (last of the falling tide mind which I dont favour there) and only 1 bass between 3 of us (around 3lb). Not a sign of a whiting never mind a codling.

I had heard the same about that beach producing also. Seems fairly poor this year so far as they're normally showin in numbers here from late October.

there is no sign of the cod down hear in cork but I don t know why because it is most certainly cold inof and there is lots of food around aswell in the way of small whiting :?

I remember a fisherman tellin me once that the cod go up the rivers after a particular baitfish (can't remember right now wot it was). I'm thinking of waterford harbour, monkstown and ferrypoint here! Anyways, if he was correct and I'm sure someone on this site will know, then if that bait hasn't arrived yet perhaps neither have the bulk of the cod. I have only had the one session recently where I got some nice cod and that was off a beach rather than an estuary!

hi there, no codling at rosstoonstown or anywhere along the coombe have fished it with several other
rods over last four weeks with all baits fresh and frozen on different tides, very unusual and very very late, have always caught from oct.along this stretch in previous years as we are local anglers, something is just not right :?:

Thats my point hammers....I fish these beaches frequently (when kelp free that is).

Same venues we fished last year the weekend of the 2nd / 3rd November 2007 and had plenty of good cod, this year, up to last weekend all we had was flounder & tiny whiting fishing similar tides.

Just when you think you have this fishing thing licked eh.....

there is a few bass being caught around 2-3lb stamp so it cant be a lack of food source though i reckon these fish are shoaling up to spawn as we found some to have had same when gutted. could be to do with migratory pattern or just lack of stock, hard to see it changing now with no show after that cold settled period, nothing up at the tunnel end either always a good spot with the outflow there, might try the rough ground in the coombe to see is there a loaner around the kelp my mate had one to 3lb there back in early oct.but not looking promising all round

Two of us fished between the point of the coombe and windmills Sunday night and only had bass, flounder and a doggie.

Sea was flat calm though..A slight westerly seems to do the trick down there....IF the fishes are there of course.
