#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me and big mick

Duration:12pm-7pm

Tide:falling,mostly :? :? :?

Weather:dd dry, bitter cold

Bait:rag,lug,squid,mack,earthworms.
dd
Rigs:2,3 hook flappers, 1 hook mini rig

Results:coalies ,pollock, rockling, whiting, sea scorpion, dabs, codling, pouting,,

me 40 plus fish, 1 pollock, 1 coalie, 4 dabs, 1 codling, 1 rockling, 1 pouting, 31 whiting(28cms-10cms)

big mick,,,,,,4 fish,,1 coalie,,,2 whiting, 1 short spined sea scorpion.

Report:Arrived at cahore harbour at 12 to find we were the only ones there apart from a guy putting down lobster pots. We set up and it was big mick who claimed the first fish, a small coalie. I had a crack off on the next cast which gave mick a laugh  and i thought to myself "this is going to be one of those days". I put on some new shockleader and while baiting up mick called out "you have a bite Dave",,,,,,,I turned around to see the small rod bent over and grabbed it. A nice litle fight ensued and i lifted a nice 36 cm pollock (at first i thought it was a bass  ) onto the pier. A quick photo and it was released, despite the blood in the pic it swam off ok. Things were looking up but this turned out to be the best fish of the session. Mick had two whiting and a new species for him , a sea scorpion, but the fishing was very slow for him . I was lucky to have one of those sessions where i had a fish nearly every cast, with about 40 fish in all . I had 3 dabs, all took earthworms which we had gathered in work while felling trees (UNDER LEAF MOULD), and decided to experiment with. Batteries went on the camera so apologies for the phone pics later on  . The whiting were mostly small, biggest about 25 cms, which took any bait. Some were caught on the retrieve as they went for the bait, others on the small rod in close, a small whiting used for bait resulted in a triple of whiting,,,,,cannibals    . I had a double of a whiting and a pouting. It was getting embarassing as i reeled in one after another with mick looking on ruefully   . It was really cold with an icy wind searching out any weakness in our clobber. My hands were freezing and it got to the stage where i was hooking myself while baiting up but feeling nothing.   . A small codling came on my last cast (mick was already heating up the jeep!!) and we headed home happy enough,,,well i did anyways,,,,big mick has to face the awkward question in work on monday "How did yis get on???"

He was ,,,unfortunately   ,,, but he favours mackeral and is lazy with other baits,,,,,there i've said it     . He's usually very lucky and they dive onto his hooks confounding all the angling theories but this time he was let down.

Ah cahore where it all started for me so many years ago. Hanging off the pier fishing for crabs. Spent every summer down there as a lad. Me and my bro are fishing a beach close by next week as it happens. We never fished there in winter before. The rocks up behind the castle used to be a good spot but have not fished them in a couple of years.

Anyway nice session lads well done. Praise the lord for the N11.

P.S. Had my first kiss not 6 kilometers from Cahore in the Hydro disco with a lass from Carlow. Won't be any of that this time though!!!!!!! :(
