West Waterford beach - 23rd November 2008

#1 Post by RockHunter »

People: Me

Duration: 3.30 - 6.00 pm

Tide: HW at 2.30 pm

Weather: Cold, strong northwesterly wind, sunny with occasional showers

Bait: lug, razor, mackerel, mussel, squid

Rigs: 3/0 pennel, single hook flapper, lures

Results: 1 bass

Report: I headed out for a short session Sunday afternoon. As there was a cold NW wind blowing I chose a fairly sheltered beach - although there was still a bit of cold wind whipping along the coast. The wind had flattened out the waves so there was very little surf and the tide was dropping so I was not too hopeful of having much success but it was still nice to be out.

There seemed to be nothing biting, not a hint of a nibble and the baits were coming back untouched. By 5.00 pm my feet were getting very cold and I was beginning to think about packing up. Then right in front of me, no more than 3 m out from the shore a bass lept into the air, clear out of the water    I grabbed the nearest rod and reeled it in quickly and put on a lure. Unfortunately it was the longest rod, 15' beachcaster. I had a spinning rod in the rod bag but I reckoned by the time I had it set up with a reel the fish would be well gone. I made a few casts with the lure - then bang, hooked onto a fish no more than 4 m out. It did some fierce thrashing about in the shallow water as I hauled it onto the beach.

It was a 50 cm bass, just over 3 lb :D :D :D

It was dusk at that stage, I did some more spinning for a little longer until the light faded.

I packed up at 6.00 pm, there had been no bites on the bait rods although not really surprising given the dropping tide and lack of surf - but I was well happy with an unexpected bass off a lure.

The bass leaping out of the water was certainly a surprise - it was very calm, just ripples rather than waves then out of the blue a bass lept at least a foot into the air - definitely a sight to send the heart racing.

Hi Seanie - no it was a different beach. One that I suspected should hold some bass.
Check out the gravel - does that give you a clue

Seanie,

The top one at the Dublin show a few year ago. The bottom 3 in the US and the eels I got off another angler but have very few left. In my humble opinion it is the best bass lure ever made. I know a guy who has 2 originals in the boxes. I offered him €200 euro for em but he wouldn't part with them.
