Re: bass obsession
Hmmm, to have asked a question like that eric, I suggest that either
a) You haven't caught enough Bass yet,
or
b) You've been catching too many Bass!

Re: bass obsession
tbh iv'e caught a good number of bass, not loads, in the last few years, plugging and bait fishing, but at the same time i get the same buzz of getting a 20 cm flat in a comp as i do getting a 5lb'er. variety is the spice of life no?

Re: bass obsession
they are lovely looking fish.
there is a perception that they are hard to catch
they run rather than dive for cover unlike pollock, wrasse, conger and dogfish the fish i would normally catch. I think that is the main reason.
If you want to keep one for the pot the taste is feckin great.
they can grow to large size.
they fight like demons.
mullet are too hard to catch
I'm afraid of tope
storm beaches are lovely places to be
I think if mackeral were a little harder to catch and grew a bit bigger that they would be as popular Ive only caught one mackeral on the fly and it was brilliant.
you forget that mullet have their own band of obsessive enthusiasts as well.

Re: bass obsession
I'm sure everyone has their own personal favourites when it comes to fishing be it chasing bass, mullet or the sharks that grace our waters in sumertime but for me the biggest buzz's are:
* meeting fellow anglers and sharing knowledge
* targeting a particular species and managing to get it
* exploring new marks and getting to fish / see new parts of the country
* getting a new species either for the first time or for the year
* improving on personal bests
* putting into practice new techniques picked up along the way

Re: bass obsession
I still get the same buzz catching fish be it a small dab of a 40lb tope ive always had that feeling and i know it will never ever leave me.
i still get the same feeling when im traveling to a spot i cant get there quick enough.
as for personal choice and i love catching bass but a big mullet is hard to beat pound for pound.
from the boat a 15lb+ coalfish on light tackle is also very hard to beat

Bass are amazing best fighting fish in the sea give me my 11ft spinning rod 8lb braid and a few maria chases and i am good to go catching bass is one of the best feelings in the world. The whistle in the braid when a fish is hooked and the rod is bent double music to my ears

Hounds are all well and good, but they're one-dimensional.
How many hounds have you caught while creeping around water only 6 inches deep with a light-weight lure setup or, maybe even a fly? How many hounds have jumped clear of the water to take a lure off the surface less than one rod length away from you? How often have you been able to sight-fish (or sound-fish!!) for hounds at close range in crystal clear water?

When one grows up and santa is gone
, there is only a few buzz's left in life!!!!!!!! When you know your into a bass, - or is it! Then the fight that can rip your arm off and you're praying to jesus that the line doesn't snap, it turns in the water and you see that glimmer of silver!!! The Hamlet cigar moment follows and you say ................ Thank god I caught before Cortaz did!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: bass obsession
i think bass are ok, they fight well enough, are moderately difficult to catch and can be caught in a variety of ways and places.
i wouldnt consider them the hardest to catch, most exciting, hardest fighters or best looking fish though.
i dont really get why they are regarded quite so highly . despite having done a fair bit for them bass fishing never really clicked for me
