Garryvoe Beaches, 20/10/2008

#1 Post by thescotsman »

People: me, petekd, Nik

Duration: 21:30-02:00

Tide: HW 22:25

Weather: slight breeze - died off after hw, cool and clear

Bait: razor, crab, rag, lug

Rigs: pulley rigs, 3 hook flapper

Results: Nik - codling, dogfish, me - 5 bearded Rockling, Pete -

Report: Decided to head East for a change and hit Ballycrenane about an hour before HW. Tramped up the beach, checked the weed in the water (it was filthy), decided to head back and see what Garryvoe was like.
Met some lads down there who only had a doggie to show for their few hours fishing.

Myself and Pete both managed a crack-off first cast, so it was probably half ten before we got a bait fishing properly. Nik meanwhile, had a nice knock on his first cast and landed himself a codling of 49cm to razor.
Things were looking good at last :D

Nik had most of the action after that with the odd bite and two dropped fish. Myself and Pete with two rods out were getting nothing. As the tide started to drop, the surf died off and I changed tactics and fished one rod in close, picking up a five bearded rockling to some rag. I then reeled in Pete's trace from the crack off earlier whilst retrieving my distance rod.
Pete headed off home about half eleven, just as he was in the car I got a good knock on the rod, started reeling in my fish, got caught on something and lost it
For the next hour myself and Nik were getting good knocks pretty often, but finding it hard to connect. I lost another fish, Nik managed a doggie and lost another fish himself.
Went quiet from then for last hour and the weed became nuisance close in. Last cast I managed to pull in my crack-off so that was result at least, managing to get both my and Pete's crack-offs back.
Nice nights fishing, kept us interested at least. Nice views of shooting stars leaving trails as a bonus.

Pity there wasn't a few more fish about. Interesting to know the codling are coming close to the shore again. What sort of distance did Nik get the codling at?

I have had a few crack offs on Ballybrannigan - maybe you could retrieve them for me

He said it was an easy cast (avoiding a crack-off funnily enough), he thought maybe 80yds?
