Wexford Bass 17/10/08

#1 Post by Security man »

People:Me & the Moon

Duration:3hrs. 7.30pm - 10.30pm

Tide:Last hr of rising, 1st 2hrs of falling

Weather:Patchy Cloud, Dry. SW Force 5 (Uncomfortable)

Bait:Mackrel heads & Peeler crab

Rigs:4/0 pennels

Results:2 Bass

Report:Despite my best efforts, unlucky enough not to have a Bass yet this year. My reels are just about ready to give up the ghost, so I decided to try a mark south of Wexford, which has produced some decent size Bass in the past fortnight or so (at least so I was told!!). Mate had pulled out at the last minute, so I went like a loner :o !

Set up two rods, one with Peeler and one with a mack head.
No weed at all for the first hour, and the lead stayed where it was supposed to. Just as the tide turned, "Tap-tap-tap" - 1st Bass landed, about 20yrds out on the mack head. Thank God for rod bells, as I was tryin to keep the headlight to minimum use!
Was a bit disappointed to be honest, as it didn't put up much of a fight. Assumed it was a small schoolie or something similar, however it was a decent enough fish and measured in at 58. Much to my disappointment, my fancy electronic digital scales (which has been rotting in the bottom of the box since last season) was bust and the batteries had leaked  - so I was unable to weight it (this fish as per pic below  ).
Delighted with meself I was  . I quickly got a new head on (the Bass had already guzzled the existing head  ) and out into the water.

There was very little happening on the crab side of things, so I rebaited the second rod with a mack head too. Within 10 minutes, BANG - second rod hit! Now this one really did put up a fight... took a few minutes to get him in (was terrified my spool was gona pack up!).
Another decent fish... measured in at 43. A lot fiestier than the last one, even though he was only a little smaller.
As I had decided to keep my first Bass of the year for the supper (also the biggest of the two), I did the decent thing with this fella and sent him on his way to fight another day - after all, he did put up a good fight so he deserved it!! Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me, so no beach photos I'm afraid...
Stayed on for another hour after that, but the Kelp had started to stir up and cause problems. Got fed up with false alarms from the rods, due to big lumps of Kelp catchin on the line and the wind had got up a bit too.
Called it a day at about 10.30pm. Looking forward to going back, as the Bass I heard of being caught there, were on the opposite end of the tide than tonight - which basically means it is productive on either end 8) .

Thats the stuff man ! Well done.

Delighted for ya ! The Mack Heads 8)
Im heading out tonight with Carpets and I reckon you were in the same spot where heading tonight, judging by the kelp being stirred up at the top of the tide.

If your heading out tonight let me know sure and we can meet up and haul some silver :)

On second thoughts that wind is freshing so it will probably rule the south coast out tonight :!:

Cheers, lads.

To be honest, if it wasn't for Danny M. and one or two others, I'd probably still be at a different mark tearin me hair out!!

I tell ya one thing, when you haven't eaten Sea bass for over a year, its bloody nice! - it was like a delicatessen, was the tastiest feed I've had in a long time (hope me missus doesn't see this! ).

Hopin to get back again during the week, if the wind dies a bit.
Pity KELP isn't as tasty!...

Welldone mate, you've certainly given them a good go lately.

Happy days you got your reward.

58cm I'd guess around the 5lb mark, but hey I'm not expert.

I got a 4 1/4lb bass last week on a strip of mack on a size 4 hook....why have I been wasting all this cash on fancy baits :?

Its nice alright, just had a piece earlier, along with 4 small fillets of whiting. I had kept a couple of whiting, 30cms plus, and i have to say, i preferred them to the bass :?

Always reckoned myself that Bass are over-rated as a table fish.
