Sad news on the sinking of the Asgard.

Has anybody got GPS coords for the area where she went down? (I want to have a look at the charts of the area.)

A very sad loss.

ì was out on my boat not to long ago when she went up dalkey sound right beside me she was a lovely craft. made from the finest iroko timbers on an oak frame, she was the last of its kind to be built in tyrells in arklow and designed by jack tyrell himself. it will be greatly missed by all.

Strange they did not head for shallow water when the problem occured?

There was a stopcock left open.
She was creaking at the seames before they even made it up to tell the Captain...
Guess they're lucky they made it off, I'd say shallower water was the least of their worries!!

(it would be some time before the wreck would start to produce in any case!!!)

At the time I just thought it was fairly fishy, there was very little information at the time and even now you hear very little about what happened. As you can see from SM's post it seems to have been human error caused the sinking.

Should not the bilge alarm have not gone ballistic before then? I presume we will have to wait for an investigation to be held.

A RV was sent down to survey the boat to assess whether it could be refloated.

As far as I know they found some planking missing or broken on the starboard side below the waterline, so perhaps it was not a stopcock. This said the damage migth have happened when it hit the sea bed (although it is listed as silt / mud).

One suggestion is that it hit a container washed overboard from a freighter, a fairly common occurence and one known to account for wooden hulled boats all over the world.

A guy on the tall ships when it was in Waterford recounted a similar "adventure"... containers often "float" just under the waves and are therefore impossible to see, especially at 2 am!

I doubt it very much.
Whatever about not SEEING a container, if you'd hit one I'd be fairly sure you'd know about it! Like having a head-on collision with a lampost at 30mph could put you through the windscreen if you had no seatbelt!
And at 2am would certainly make hammocks swing!!
