donegal bass?

#1 Post by gravel »

Are there any bass round donegal, as all the bass you hear of being caught is down south, is it that the water temperature is alot cooler?

think they are rare up there, but have heard of some being caught. You can get some bass off the east coast of Scotland in the North Sea so surely the atlantic off Donegal should be positively balmy by comparison...

Get them of the north Antrim and Londonderry coasts as well so don't see why they wouldn't be in Donegal, but definitley not as many about as further south.

I would imagine dooey beach would throw up a few. Haven't fished it though.

It's a storm beach and very popular with the surfers.

Quite a few bass in the north of the county, Inishowen and further west. Odd ones along southern and western approaches, mate had an 8lb fish one night last year on beach near Killybegs. Took his trace with silver floaty beads whilst he was retrieving, must have mistaken the flash of the beads for a baitfish.
Sea Species(25) bass, codling, whiting, turbot, seatrout, stingray, pollock, coalfish, longspine scorpion, ballan wrasse, dogfish, ling, pouting, poor cod, dab, mackerel, smelt, sandeel, launce, bull huss, painted ray, thick lip mullet, golden grey mullet, rock goby.

An 8 lb Bass would be a pretty fantastic Bass up this way. Generally, they're a lot smaller, in the schoolie to 4 - 5 lb stamp of fish.

Not easy to find them, either. Best bet would be to pick a handy looking beach in Fanad or Inishowen and fish it totally -- all stages of the tide, time of year, baits etc until you crack it.

Or do what I did - went fishing with someone who had already cracked it.........

i'd say rossnauwla would chuck up a few haven't fished it though but all that you need is a strong westerly wind. definitely worth a go.

with out doubt there are bass on the beaches in donegal ,but you have to put in the hours and reserch to get them.most atlantic west facing beaches will throw up bass ,maybe not in big numbers and the fish may not be that big,but they are there.
