20th Sept. Bangor Pier. Co.Down

#1 Post by nifisher »

People:Me and Mate Pete

Duration:2 Sessions 1.30pm - 5.30pm and 7.30pm - 10.30pm

Tide:First Session few hours either side i high 2nd session over low water

Weather:First very hot when the sun came out to play. Second I can feel the new floatation suit coming out very soon !!

Bait:Ragworm and Lugworm

Rigs: Simple 1 and 2 hook flappers

Results: First Session. New Species which took a long time coming Goldshinny Wrasse :D and a Black Goby :D others Pollock, Coaly, Ballan Wrasse to nearly 2lb, Corkwing Wrasse, Pouting, Long spined Sea Scorpian, Rock Goby with a pink dorsal instead of Yellow :? and Shanny. 2nd Session Pouting and Whiting.

Report: Decided to head to Bangor Pier for a few hours this afternoon and went back to try it at night to finish off the bait. Day started well straight into a nice small Ballan Wrasse. Cant remember the order of the fish but the fishing was good with a nice variety of species coming at a good steady rate most of the day. All of the fish where caught from the same spot. My wife brought my son Ryan down to see us fishing. I managed to get a nice Ballan around the 2lb bracket which bent the life out of the mini rod as it darted from side to side trying to get its head into any rock in site.I showed him the nice Ballan Corkwing and Long Spined Sea Scorpian but all he was interested in really was seeing the Pickie Puffer (Train). Well there is still time he is only 3 !! :D :D Managed to get a nice rock fish which after consulting the Mini species Bible turned out to be a Black Goby. Finally managed to get a nice Goldshinny wrasse after Ronald telling me there are lots of the around and not being able to get one. :D :D :D . My mate Pete managed to get what i think was a Rock Goby but instead of the Yellow Dorsal fin it was a light pink colour ?? :? Turned out to be a Great session!!

Second session big difference from earlier in the temperature department think the new Floatation Suit will be coming along to the night sessions in the very near future. Although nobody told the mad women who had had a few too many decided to go for a swim voluntarely jumping off the pier. Her other half asked us to reel in our lines so that we wouldnt catch his Tackle!! when he jumped off the Mackeral Stand. I had to inform him that it was low water and the rocks would not be nice to land on much to his dissapointment, so he went a put his trousers on again. MAD !! A boat came out from the Marina and told her to get out of the water and the Police and Ambulance arrived soon after. Makes me   wasting resources like that.
Anyway back to the fishing. We managed a few nice Pouting and a few Pin Whiting and some of them really where Pin sized still willing to take a size 1 hook :D Greedy wee Buggers!!

Nice going.

Were you fishing inside or outside the pier. I have to admit I've had relatively little success at Bangor compared to other places.

Alan.

ps. You are braver than me, fishing there on a Saturday night!

nice fishing man, you got a few species we've not ticked off the list yet. we'll have to pull resources some day and show you some spots there that produce some species you have'nt got yet, just a pity you missed out on the male and female lesser spotted drunken idiot. that would have been a another new species for ya        i'd say they would have given a real good account of themselves on light tackle

Saltydog I dont think it was a full moon about 2/3!! What would it have been like on a full moon?? :D The mad swimmer told a man that tried to talk her out that she does it every weekend and to stop worring!! she wouldnt put herself in any danger  .

Al any time you are up for a session drop me a pm I would be up for a run out. I should have tried for the new species as you suggest even Ronald hasnt bagged those 2 for the species hunt

Nobuzz I was fishing the inside the pier just at the steps after where the fishing boats tie up. I would only fish here a couple of hours either side of high water. The rig I was using was a 1 hook flapper tied using a dropper loop . 12lb line with a 4 or 5" hook lenght and about 6-8" to the weight. Hook size 4 or 6 nothing fancy. The rod is the key to this type of fishing to have the bite detection and get enjoyment out of the mini species. I got a Shakespeare Ugly Stik 6ft mini rod after seeing Ronald using a 4ft6 version. The rod is virtually indistructable as Robin from Trap and Tackle will demonstrate bending it in ways I wouldnt dare, for £25 I dont think you could do any better. It has brought a totally different aspect and enjoyment to my fishing. I have had Wrasse up to 2lb on them with no problem but I know of Congers and a 31lb Cod being taken on the mini rods.

P.S. Suprisingly the pier was very quiet bar the swimmers guess the cold weather will keep most of the morons away. In saying that I probably wouldnt go down on my own.

Nicefish I didnt see the Train but the fishing more than made up for that !! :)
