Strangford Lough, Co Down 21st September 2008

#1 Post by nobuzz »

People: Me

Duration: 8:00 - 12:00

Tide: Dropping to low.

Weather:dd Too nice :-)

Bait: Sandeels & bread
dd
Rigs: 2 up 1 down. Float

Results: Nothing.

Report: I normally try fly fishing in the Lough for Sea trout at this time of year. I'm usually quite successful with small sea trout. However I've always seen plenty of larger trout and good mullet at this particular mark so I went there today with the bait rods. I've also heard that sandeels tend to take the better fish.

When I arrived there were mullet feeding everywhere. After an hour of wasting bread on them I decided to switch my attention to the sea trout (and whatever else came along). I set up a rod, 2 up - one down with sandeel. I also trotted a sandeel out on the tide.

I didn't see a trout let alone catch one. Normally at this time of year the water is alive with trout jumping and generally causing a fuss.

I suspect the bed is carpeted with crabs as the bottom rod was stripped of bait everytime I reeled-in.

Still, it was nice to get out!
Species List 2012 (Me) - Lesser Spotted Dogfish, Plaice, Codling, pollack, dab, SS Scorpion Fish, Ballan Wrasse, Codling.

Bad luck. Been trying a mark myself in the portaferry area myself with no luck either. Have used bottom fishing and spinners while fish have been jumping outa the water only a few feet from the edge and still could not catch them. Always worth a try though
