wicklow harbour, sept 19th 08

#1 Post by eyesreilly »

People:me, fishface dropped by for a chat and caught 2 fish

Duration:3pm - 8-15pm

Tide:high at 2-30pmapprox

Weather:dd fine, sunny, calm

Bait:mack fillets, squid, frozen peeler
dd
Rigs:single hook rigs and 2 hook flappers

Results:me, 3 whiting, 6 pollock and 2 sea scorpions :?: :?: fishface 2 pollock

Report: Havent been out fishing for a couple of weeks so decided to head to wicklow harbour to get my fix for the weekend. Only a couple of lads fishing so i set up under the light house between two guys. Couldnt stay there though as there was a strong tide running which brought their lines across mine quick as a flash. Moved around the corner but had no luck there so went back when the lads went.

Tried various combos of mack and squid, crab and mack , but nothing happening. Tried a sandeel tipped with squid and got a whiting, blank saved  . Was looking dodgy for a while there. Only got 3 decent whiting all day on the beachcaster with long periods without a bite  . Nothing doing on the other rod with feathers and lures and guys told me there hadnt been any macks about in recent days.

I tried some small hooks tipped with mack and squid just tossed a few yards out over the edge of the pier and let them sink to the bottom. Then i took up the slack and waited for a bite. I could feel every nibble on this small set up and it wasnt long before i hooked a small pollock. I was at this for most of the afternoon and caught 6 pollock and what i think were 2 sea scorpions, a new species  . These small fish made up the numbers for the session and were fun to catch, pollock were only about 6-8 inches long. Fishface arrived for a chat and naturally enough  caught two pollock in as many minutes before giving me back the rod . I couldnt believe that there werent more people about fishing as it was so nice but i wasnt complaining. Best fish of the session was a 30 cm whiting which came as dusk fell. I ran out of bait then so i left happy enough with my afternoons fishing  .
