Hook & Swivel Size Chart?

#1 Post by Millbank »

Does anyone know if there is an "actual size" chart available, for hooks, swivels etc? I've been tempted several times with bulk tackle offers online, but have had to back off as I'm not sure of the sizes the standard reference numbers refer to. It would be great to be able to see at a glance if the tackle was what I wanted, and would be a great help until I eventually get familiar with the numbers!

I know what you mean the bulk bags. I found myself on ebay a while ago and though it was Christmas when I got a great deal on some stuff. The sizes were ok but my warning in this.........

A few rigs that were cast kept going and are now somewhere in the Irish Sea. Not worth a sh!t.

Millbank,

As far as I am aware there is no standard size for hooks or swivels.

For hooks a sz 1/0 in one pattern can be quite different to another i.e. the gape on a 1/0 aberdeen is drastically different to a 1/0 limerick pattern that you might use for crab baits. Then they vary by manufacturer, a 1/0 Mustad aberdeen is not the same size as a 1/0 Kamazan.

Swivels suffer the same problem. In general terms a sz4 ~80-100lb breaking strain is used for the top of rigs with a sz10 45lb bs for snoods on a 3 hook flapper lets say. Buying swivels by poundage is a safe way to buy them particularly when they are used for beach casting.

NB. When buying swivels i.e. around the 100lb mark for the top of traces beware that the wire of the eye of the swivel is thick enough and isn't going to cut through the knot.

The Mustad site has size charts for their various patterns of hook, it might be of some help. However as Liamo pointed out they do seem to vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and from pattern to pattern.
