Clare coast & Salthill Galway 12.09.08 -13.09.08

#1 Post by saltydog »

People: stevecrow74 & myself

Duration: 7:30 - 04:30 (including travelling)

Tide: dropping then rising

Weather: good nice sunny evening and clear night little wind

Bait: limpet, mackerel, sandeel & squid

Rigs: free line, running ledgers, one up one downs, floats.

Results: ballan wrasse, pollack, doggies, huss, long spined sea scorpion

Report: After a magical mystery tour of the Clare coastline in search of wrasse and triggers, we arrived at a mark that looked "fishy"!! We set off with spinning rods in hand to travese down the headland to fish off a rocky platform that juts out into the bay. Using limpets as bait we had instant success with wrasse (first of the year for both of us) coming thick and fast loads of missed bites with a pollack thrown in alas no triggers we only managed an hour here as the light was dropping and the trek back up the headland didn't look that appealling to be atempted after dark

Results mark 1: steve - 3 ballan wrasse 1 pollack, myself - 3 ballan wrasse

Set off back up the coast and passing through Doolin we thought we try off pier. The tide was nearing low when we set up we tried free lines ledgering and floats hoping to pick up some mini species. There was no action so we decided to head back to Galway and try for huss in salthill.

Results mark 2: steve - blank, myself - blank

Arrived at Salthill and set one rod each the hunt for huss was on :) steve was first in with a couple of dogs then i picked up a dog, steve was in next with a huss (no real size) it's still a bit early for them but good to see they've arrived in the bay. Things slackened off i tried a change of tactics for the last cast and it came up trumps with me picking up my first ever long spined scorpion fish :D

Results mark 3: steve - 4 dogs 1 huss, myself 1 dog 1 long spined scorpion fish

Summary: Overall we were happy enough with the new species for the year and a new species for myself. We spent a bit of time searching out marks in Clare and we have one or two on the sat nav for next time, so hopefully we'll connect with the triggers
