Lanzarote advice

#1 Post by RockHunter »

I had intended to head down to Kerry or West Cork for a week of fishing in late September but the weather has been so crap this summer I have decided to head for some place warm and sunny with fish - so it looks like I will be going to Lanzarote. :D :D :D

I had a read through the Holiday Snappers section but I need some advice.

I will be bringing just one rod - should I take a spinning or beach casting rod?
I do have a 12' penn firetip rod - which is light enough for spinning and can be used for moderate distance beach casting as well - would that be the rod to bring?
Would it be best to concentrate on lure or bait fishing?
What would be best - beach, rock or pier fishing?
Can anybody recommend any hot spots? I will be hiring a car so travelling around won't be a problem.

For bait fishing what size hooks and types of rigs would be best?
Should I concentrate on bottom or float fishing?
Are there any particular lures that are most effective there?

Is there a good tackle shop on the island?

I read that squid was a good bait for there - is there anything else that I should consider?

I was there a few years ago and brought with me a small telescopic rod for the fun of it. Anyway I only tried fishing the last night as I had an early flight and dont do hangover flights too well. I didnt know what to expect. Was using a small German sprat and had a Bass around 2Ib and some other fish a bit like a jack but wasnt sure what it was.

Went mad as I didnt know they had Bass over there in the first place and was kicking myself for not going more.

Thanks Roger, Eoghan,

Roger - which beach was that? I guess you were kicking yourself alright for not brings any gear when you saw those two bass been hauled in.
Are there beaches or sections of the beaches that are not infested with swimmers, surfers etc?

fished the harbour in porto del carmen 2 years ago a few times, hooked a huge eel that smashed a cheap telescopic rod in half and then half again before getting free, spent ages looking for tackle and all i could find was some spade end hooks and stuff in a locals supermarket, guys were spinning on outside wall of harbour but got nothing. also done the sport fishing boat exsperience and got nothing myself but the catch for 12 people was two albacore, 1 lemon fish and 3 tiny moray eels, only advice i have is bring all your own tackle and equipment if possible and check the local fishmongers for sardines as bait, good luck
