Crimps Vs Superglue?
I'm worried that the crimps I'm using to trap beads and swivels on my traces will weaken the line too much. I might be using too much force when locking the crimp into place, but the line does look very "squashed". I've tried using Superglue, and a drop secures the bead in place perfectly. While this seems to do the job, I wondered if the now "hard" bit of line under the bead is at full strength, or does the glue effect the mono in any way? Any opinions?

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
ive always used crimps and never had one cause the trace to part, try use soft crimps (copper i think) and only apply minimal pressure to hold it

Use coil crimps instead, then you'll have no worries about damage to line strength.

Hi,
Crimps shouldn't cause any problem, just tighten them enough so that they don't move but don't squash the s@!t out of them! Never had one break the mainline. On the superglue I wonder will it go brittle when using the rig causing you to loose snood postiions?

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
Use tubing and make stop knots with it, has the advantage of being adjustable also, and no line damage.
I've made a post here before showing the type of stuff that you can get pretty easily that'll do the job, have a search.

Eoinmag,
Eventually found your post on the "Filofun" tubing, and checked the net. I found packs of 40 strands for $0.98 each - so they're on the way! Thanks for the advice - much appreciated.

Nice one, I've found that you need to do like three knots of the filofun, it won't last on the rig forever, but then rigs don't last forever either.
You can also get some better knotting material which is a surgical strength rubber tubing, sold by a guy on the WSF forums called David Gould, it's better but not near as cheap as the filofun.
It works on rig bodies up to 60lb well, after that you're stretching the material a lot and the surgical tubing is better, but at the price you can't go wrong.

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
Can anyone post a pic of a stop-knot using tubing.
I think I know what you guys are talking about and am keen to try it.
At the minute I just tie my snoods on using a Water Knot.
I generally fish "light" - 25lb leader with 15lb snoods.
I can however see the benefits of the 50-60lb leader.

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
Hi Nobuzz, I'll have to take a photo of it tonight at home, basically what you do is take your short length of tubing, about 2-3mm long, and put one end of your line through, then bring it round and put it through the same end again so you have a piece of tubing with line protruding from both ends and forming a loop with the tubing in the middle and then you pull the both free ends, what happens is the tubing turns inside out in spots and holds tight on the line.
Like I said I'll do a photo of it tonight if I remember.
If you're not doing powercasting then there's nothing wrong with lighter rig bodies.
If you are power casting there's no point in having a shockleader on of 60lb to have terminal tackle of 25-30lb.
I use 30lb line on my flappers, but then they're not being whacked out hard and they normally are on lighter leads of 2-3oz rather than the 6oz beasties.

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
Slide the tube on the line.
Put the line through then loop it through again.
Pull both ends then slide knot to desired position.
If I'm making a heavy rig then I tend to use the better rubber surgical tubing, but this stuff works fine, just tends to rip when it gets too cold and from being slid too much, but you will get two to three sessions out of it first.
I also would tend to double or treble up knots on places like below the beed-swivel-beed.
One side effect of this method that I forgot to mention is that you'll very rarely lose a rig, cos when you hook up or snag the hook the snood slides down towards the lead like with a pulley rig and lifts the lead up off the bottom and out of snags just reset it for the next cast or change rigs if double patting.

Eoinmag,
Quick question - where do you buy the "surgical tubing"? Is it just a local pharmacy item, or a bit more specialist?
My purchase of Filofun fell through, as the source just sent me an e-mail saying they no longer stock it. Sounds like the surgical type is the business anyway!

Re: Crimps Vs Superglue?
A guy on the www.worldseafishing.com forum called David Gould.
He sells it not too dear, can't remember the exact price but it's a good bit for the money, a metre of it goes a long way.
He does a lot of stuff for rig builders, including large glow beads etc.
I found his tubing pretty good value.
If you pm me your address I can send you a few pieces of the filofun tubing for nothing, I have a whole pack of it and I don't see it running low for a while.
The other thing is that you might get it on ebay too as scoubidou kits, it's basically stuff kids use for plaiting, making bracelets and necklaces and stuff.
Only thing is that I can't vouch for other brands apart from the one I have, but at least at the price for the amount, it's worth a go.
