Achill Island - mullet

#1 Post by pete »

Had a nice morning's fishing with mate at pier on Achill yesterday. Noticed plenty of mullet around moorings so started dropping pieces of bread flake in over them, took about a half an hour of this before they coped on that it was actually something that could be eaten. From the pier height it was possible to watch fish start hoovering in the flakes so naturally enough, and amongst much excitement, threw a hook and tiny lead together and semi free lined a piece of bread. Worked a treat and we took four fish all in the 4lb to 5lb bracket. Seen some brutes too which could have been near to 7lb. Great fun and no stinky mackerel/razorfish smells to contend with afterwards :)

It can be pretty tough at times trying to figure out if its one of the free offerings or the flake with the hook they've sucked in, great fun. Just goes to show too that they can be quite bold at times, i only had my fladden multi tip boat rod with 40lb braid whilst the mate was using a a heavy pollock rod with 30lb mono!
